WoW WotLK Classic Dungeon Guide: Pit of Saron

Monstrous: Garfrost!

The Pit of Saron, the second wing of the five-man playgrounds in Icecrown Citadel from Phase 4 of WotLK Classic, is an outdoor instance and the sequel to the forge of souls – if your quests have not yet taken you to the forge or if you have not yet completed the dungeon, then the trip to the pit is not yet open to you. Because it’s an outdoor instance, you can dash through the pits on your land mount, but you can’t fly. Right behind the teleport platform that you use to enter the instance, two standard opponents are waiting for you – and the end boss, Scourgelord Tyrannus! well? Perched on the back of his frost wyrm, Hoarfrost, he scowls at you.

But only when you attack the necromancers on the ground, life comes into the booth. Suddenly, allies of your faction appear and one of the leaders – Sylvanas for the Horde, Jaina for the Alliance. Now Tyrannus rumbles that you cannot stop him and his master Arthas. And he has an ace up his sleeve. All the nameless NPCs who rushed to the necromancers are lifted up and strangled, then rise again as a skeleton army. That was probably nothing to do with the support.

After the standard opponents are defeated, we learn from our tour guide that we should free the slaves from the mines. Meanwhile, our celebrity companion is waiting. Well done. So we ride off alone and fend off all sorts of trash enemies: proto-dragons and their riders, haunted creatures and skeletons, and members of the San’layn. Then we find a very big chunk at the rear end. The plagued giant Garfrost patrols an area full of bony fellows. We try to pull the skeletons one by one – without success, Garfrost comes with us.

And the contaminated guy is pretty cool, literally. He applies a frost debuff that causes us to take more chilly damage and that constantly stacks. At the same time, the giant has an aura of frost damage that affects us. It’s handy that Garfrost runs to the walls of the battlefield at regular intervals and throws saronite stones around. The stones cause a little damage when they hit us. But we can take cover behind the boulders and let the frost debuff run out. However, we are often not in line of sight to our fellow combatants – this is annoying, especially for healers.

So once the boss pull is done, the tank uses area-wide abilities to bind the adds to itself. Garfrost is tanked with his back to the group. Only the tank can get the Supercooling Wave. The wave hits all players who are in front of the boss. Every two seconds, the Forgemaster casts the stacking debuff Permafrost. With each stack, your Frost damage taken increases by 10% of the base 200 points, up to a maximum of 300%. The debuff also deals damage. This depends on the number of stacks. When the first 30 seconds of the fight are over, Garfrost stuns you and runs to one of the two forges. Forgemaster Garfrost now creates a Saronite Rock. Garfrost throws one of these rocks around every 30 seconds. Ideal because, as mentioned, you can hide behind the rock to get rid of the permafrost debuff.

Once Garfrost is defeated, a legion of grateful work slaves will rush in to cobble together their own gear at forges and crafting tables.

We, on the other hand, head west and meet Krick and Ick there. Krick is a nasty leper gnome who perches on the back of the plague monstrosity Ick. As plague-slinging as Ick looks, so does he act. Periodically, he spits poison in our faces and on the floor. If you stop in the green puddles, you will take a lot of damage, especially in the instance’s heroic mode. Krick, on the other hand, is a tinkerer, and at about 50 percent health he starts spawning five to seven Exploding Orbs all over the area. These are similar to a mage’s arcane blast. Definitely avoid this one. If you stop in a mine, the hemispheres will grow and deal some damage when detonated. So keep moving.

Be sure to avoid the explosions!

At irregular intervals, a random player becomes the target of Ick. The affected player gets a purple arrow over their head and has to flee from the boss. The ability itself does no damage. If the player is caught by Ick, he will feel a Mighty Kick. Ick is not tauntable at this stage. If you don’t manage to flee in time, this usually means your pixel death. Luckily, Ick forgoes his other abilities in the pursuit phase.

If Ick dies, then Krick is no longer so convinced of his destructive nature and begs us for mercy. To ensure his survival, he tells us that Frostmourne – Arthas’ legendary sword – lies unguarded in the rooms of the next instance. We don’t miss the chance and ride through a tunnel up to the Halls of Reflection – however, Scourgelord Tyrannus stands in our way. He commands his mount Roughfang, a true frost wyrm, to collapse the tunnel’s ceiling.

Frosty runes appear on the ground so we know where the chunks of ice fall from the ceiling – this way we can avoid damage and a knockback effect. Of course, skeletons also await us, which we professionally transform into piles of bones. Arriving at the upper exit of the corridor, we meet familiar faces. The slaves that we have freed throughout the instance post themselves with our companion Jaina or Sylvanas at the end of the cave and hold back entire hordes of Scourge enemies during our confrontation with Scourgelord Tyrannus.

However, we will focus on Tyrannus and his wyrm Roughfang. After a brief opening sequence, the Scourgelord jumps off his mount. Roughfang spins in circles in the sky, occasionally locking us in blocks of ice. He also spits frosty attacks on the ground. This is important because Tyrannus regularly throws a little tantrum and then gets stronger. If the tank drags him through the ice patches on the ground, the boss will cool down again.

A second important ability of Tyrannus: He regularly distributes a debuff to a randomly selected player. If this hero deals damage, then this is also directed to the target of Tyrannus – that is, to the tank. So damage dealers should take a break if they don’t want to send their own tank to the eternal hunting grounds. Healers also put an action stop. If they supply the tank, they heal Tyrannus and thus prolong the fight. So always pay careful attention to whether you have the Overlord’s Brand debuff.
