Cyberpunk 2077 is as popular as ever - surpassing Witcher 3

from Matthias Brueckle
If Cyberpunk 2077 suddenly has higher peak player numbers than The Witcher 3 after almost two years, then that’s a surprise. Why is the controversial sci-fi RPG suddenly so popular?

Is Cyberpunk 2077’s big comeback here? The latest player numbers speak for it. Because on several days in a row, over a million players looked into the game at the same time. This includes both newcomers and returning cyberpunks. The developers announced the official one on Twitter and thanked all their “Chooms”.

From the Ashes: Cyberpunk 2077 had a lot of problems

Incidentally, while the player counts are clearly cross-platform numbers (the most recent peak on Steam is 130,000 according to steamdb), the result is still impressive. Finally, the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 (buy now €48.43) almost two years back – with a far from rosy reputation in the gaming community. Finally, the game suffered from massive bugs, performance issues and missing features, that players and we had wished for.

The Cyberpunk 2077 Rescue: Patches and an Anime

But the new cyberpunk success is not only due to a popular patch 1.6, which we had to praise. But the stroke of genius is called “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”. The Netflix anime, which takes place in Night City, has garnered a ton of positive reviews and praise from viewers. And thanks to the series, many of them were (again) in the mood for Netrunning, Cyberpsychos & Co.! This effect is not new – thanks to the release of the associated Netflix series in January 2020, The Witcher 3 also set a record of 100,000 players simultaneously on Steam. The latter has now been surpassed by Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time since December 2020 with a Steam peak of 136,724 players.
