Crazy waiting times in WoW WotLK Classic: Players are not allowed to start after a nap

The start of WoW WotLK Classic went really bad on some servers. A forum post made clear how long the queue was for some players.

In the night of September 27, 2022, the release of WoW Wrath of the Lich King Classic took place. For us in Germany, the starting signal was given at midnight. Depending on the situation in the USA, you could start at 3:00 p.m. local time. The rush in the regions where you could play during the day was correspondingly large.

We show you what experiences the players share from their starts.

Hours of queues – also in Germany?

One player writes: In the WoW forums writes player Stonyj that he is still in the queue after a nap and still cannot play. He had probably chosen to sleep in such a way that he registered in advance in the queue and bridged the waiting time.

The user writes: “I queued at 4:00 p.m. I then slept for 5 hours and now I’m still in line for another 2 hours.” The user wrote the post on the launch day of WotLK Classic. “Holy Moly, what a long wait today,” he adds.

Other users agree and share similar experiences.

  • “Since I got off work, I’ve been in a queue. […]”
  • “This is stupid. I joined at a similar time in the queue and was able to get in around 9:30pm.”
  • “Have been in line since 1pm and now 8 hours later still not in. The calculation shows that I still have 1.5 hours of waiting time before I can come in and play. Until then I have to go offline and to bed to be ready for work tomorrow. It will get better, but not anytime soon.”
  • “I joined the queue at 3:20pm and then went to work. It is now four minutes to 11pm and I still have 40 minutes [in der Warteschlange] left over.”

This is what it looks like when you get to the servers: Our WoW expert Benedict Grothaus didn’t miss it and headed directly to the server for the release. He logged in before the start and was able to wait for midnight with hundreds of other players. Everyone stood together at the dock and waited for the ship that had to take them to Northrend. You can see in the video how the huge group started moving when the barge arrived and docked a little later in Nordend:

Hundreds of players are crammed onto a boat for the release of WotLK Classic and I’m right in the middle of it

Were the queues that bad everywhere? no From our own experience and from talking to our fellow players, we know that only the popular servers had such huge queues. That was to be expected. The servers with a low population sometimes had no queues at all.

With the popular EU server Venoxis, you have to expect queues even days after the release. Even today, at peak times, you still have to queue for a few minutes. For the release on September 27th, the servers were jam-packed – and with them the queues.
