Skull & Bones postponed again: odyssey across the 7 seas

from Andrew Link
Skull & Bones’ odyssey across the seven seas continues: Ubisoft is postponing the release. The new window is now March 9th, 2023. It won’t be specific, but you can probably read that you want to take more time for balancing and polishing – a result of the beta?

The Skull & Bones release date has been pushed back yet again. The game announced in 2017 will now be released on March 9th, 2023 and not this year anymore. Why? Ubisoft does not specifically explain this in the brief announcement. Ubisoft’s team is balancing and polishing the game and apparently it takes more time for that. Presumably the beta has given new conclusions here, because the development is complete. In the narrative of the game, this is logically another setback after the long development period.

At the gameplay presentation this year, the game was also received cautiously. It could have been so easy for Ubisoft: The idea was born when players rated the ship combat in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag as entertaining and demanded more of it. Ubisoft took about four years to announce it, but the development should have quickly lost sight of the actual goal – a Black Flag ship combat stand-alone game.

One day we may learn more about the cursed development of Skull & Bones and how a spin-off got so far off course. Of course, there are also factors that cannot be assessed from the outside at the moment. But the long development also takes its toll – graphically something has happened since 2017 and Skull & Bones, the criticized player, is more reminiscent of Black Flag from 2013 than a modern strategy game from 2022. The first scheduled release period was 2018!

Simple is sometimes better: Ironically, Electronic Arts cut out the dog-fight space combat from Battlefront 2 and published, slightly modified, Squadrons for what used to be 40 euros. This was well received and it was almost a pity that the long-term support remained manageable. It remains to be seen whether Skull & Bones can successfully dock after the long odyssey in March. Especially since the market with Sea of Thieves also has an alternative.
