The idea of virtual realities hasn’t only excited people since the Oculus Rift, the holodeck already sparked a similar fascination. Michael Hengst still prefers to stay in the real world for now.

Probably the most fascinating invention of the TV series star trek neither the replicator nor the photon torpedoes, neither the warp drive nor the transporter deserve the title. Of course, the holodeck is the authors’ most exciting idea. A stroke of genius to tell the most absurd and fantastic stories, a technological wet dream for the geeks of this world, with which the crew was placed in the most diverse virtual scenarios. Whether film noir, James Bond-Parody, spaghetti westerns or the Flash Gordon-Episode Bride of Chaotica, the diverse scenarios were among the highlights of the Star Trek seasons. The possibilities were endless. There were not only classic learning or combat training programs and harmless historical pleasures, because even a possible “dark” side of the holodecks was already thought of. The famous Barclay program number 9 or the Pleasure Maze of Quarn Naz’rk should not be forgotten. At that time, the creators of the series at least hinted at the more “adult-friendly” application scenarios of the future technology.

No wonder the creation of virtual realities has been high on the priority list of some tech researchers for years. And quite a few of them will have been influenced by Star Trek. Unfortunately, we’re still light years from the sensory quality of a holodeck…
