The news that Google Stadia is being discontinued shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to most of you. Nevertheless, the question naturally arises for you as to what happens next if you have subscribed to the streaming service. In this article, we summarize for you what you can get a refund for and what the next steps are.

Hardware and Games Refunds – How to get your money back

Google Stadia will be shut down on January 18, 2023. Until then, you still have access to your library and can still play games to the end. Google warns that there may be problems in the past few months, but expects most games to work normally. When it comes to refunds, the company in one blog post made the following statement:

We will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, all games, and all add-on content made through the Stadia Store.

Further detailed questions will be answered on a FAQ page answered.

How does the refund work? This is not known at the moment. Google plans to publish country-specific updates on the blog soon. We will of course update this article for you as soon as there is new information. At the moment it looks like you don’t have to send in your hardware to get the money back.

Google expects most refunds to be processed by the end of service in January. The money should flow back to the original means of payment.

No longer have access to your original payment method? Then you should look out for emails from Google that will give you instructions. This also applies to anyone who paid with a gift card that no longer exists.

Stadia Pro membership is non-refundable: However, if you already had an active Pro subscription on September 29th, you can access the library without being billed until the service is switched off.

Game purchase and preorders: The Stadia Store is already closed. From now on, no more games can be bought. In-game transactions are also no longer possible. Did you pre-order a game? Don’t worry: the pre-order will be canceled automatically and you don’t have to pay for it.

Game progress: You can only take the progress in your games with you if titles support crossplay. If this is not the case, it will unfortunately be lost. So if you really want to finish a game, you should do so by January 18th.
