Pokémon GO: If you're going to abandon in-game raids, don't be so selfish

In Pokémon GO, trainers have been able to raid together remotely for some time. But that always leads to tensions between the players. We at MeinMMO explain the reasons for this and show you which feature the community believes could help here.

What is the problem? In Pokémon GO you can not only encounter Pokémon in the wild, but also in raids. In addition to Pokémon that are relatively easy to defeat alone, there are also stronger bosses, such as legendary Pokémon or Ultra Beasts, for which many need a little help from other trainers.

Especially before the corona pandemic, smaller groups of players met regularly to secure the monsters of the level 5 raids together. With the introduction of so-called long-distance raid passes, it is now also possible to be invited to and participate in raids from other parts of the world.

But that inevitably leads to problems. Coaches leave the lobby again and again shortly before the raid starts, which of course leads to frustration among the other players. So what you should do if you don’t want to raid anymore and what the Niantic trainers want, we’ve summarized below.

You should keep this in mind when leaving raids

The problem of other players leaving the lobby a few seconds before the start of a raid has existed for a while. And also reddit user Kangabolic reports in his current article on this painful experience.

What happened to Kangabolic? He says he’s been invited to remote raids by other players four times in the past month. But they always left the lobby about 5 seconds before the start and he was there alone.

While he says there were only three or four of them in the lobby, he’s confident they were enough trainers to defeat Katagami and Yveltal. Due to the behavior of his supposed friends, his raid passes are now gone and he couldn’t secure the monsters in this way either.

Although he has now removed these coaches from his list, he still speaks clear words to his teammates (via reddit.com): “If you want to exit a raid lobby, do so in about 20 seconds [vor dem Start]so the rest of the lobby has time to leave as well.”

And with this appeal, Kangabolic is also getting a lot of encouragement. At the current time (09/30/2022 at 10:00 a.m.) his post on reddit already has over 1,900 upvotes.

Why is time so important when exiting the lobby?

In contrast to raids, which you play with other players on site, it is harder for you to coordinate with long-distance raids. Especially because many coaches don’t even know these players in real life.

It takes a few seconds for the other trainers in Pokémon GO to see that they have left the lobby. But these are crucial seconds in order to be able to leave a raid yourself if necessary.

If you only have 5 seconds left, it is possible that the other player will not notice your exit until the fight. But then it’s too late and in the worst case his raid pass is gone. This is particularly annoying because the long-distance raid passes are now relatively expensive.

Why are trainers leaving raids? Why some trainers change their minds shortly before the start of the raid is not entirely certain. One assumption would be that the number of players in the lobby is too few and they have concerns about not making the raid like this. Regardless of the time and their fellow players, they may then leave the lobby to save themselves the pass.

Some players suspect that this is mainly because some trainers are unsure how many people are needed for a raid and what are the best counters against the raid boss.

Maybe the trainers are just waiting in vain for a certain friend and therefore leave the raid. It is not possible to give a general answer as to which reasons there are and in the end they depend on each individual.

It has also happened to me a number of times that I was alone in the lobby. You can read what I think about it in the following post:

Trainers request chat functionality in the lobby

A quick glance at the comments makes it clear that Kangabolic is by no means alone in this experience. Countless players also express that they were abandoned by their “friends” before starting a raid and ended up alone in the raid.

A strong point of criticism here is above all the lack of communication options in the game. For years, trainers have been asking for an in-game chat in order to be able to coordinate with other players. This would be helpful, especially for agreements in raids, as can also be read in the comments (via reddit.com):

  • Carry_On: “I wish there was a way to send a message to a lobby that me and my friend can beat the boss and that I just invited people to help them and save up revives.”
  • Hibbity5: “It happened to me all the time on this raid. I can do this raid alone, but I invite people because I want it to take less time (and I’m nice too, but mostly for the time). It’s so annoying and I wish we had a way to let people know we can do the raid alone.”
  • Pokii: “Hopefully Campfire will help with that.”

Is a chat conceivable? With regard to a better agreement between the trainers, Niantic already announced a new app in the summer that should remedy this. So you should finally be able to chat with the help of Campfire in the future. A separate chat function in Pokémon GO is probably not yet planned.

But some players see this critically, because Campfire is an external app and you would always have to switch for agreements. As Kangabolic writes in the comments:

Isn’t that a completely separate app that we have to manage at the same time instead of it being just a game feature?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll use it if I can sign up for it, but come on. It’s 2022 and the tech is there to make it in-game. Just another way Niantic is being sloppy and clunky without providing any real explanation.

Is there any way not to lose the passport?

Invite again: You can invite trainers again as long as a raid is running. So if he has already invested his raid pass, he can use it until the raid boss disappears from this arena or you have completed the raid.

So you should definitely do that if you leave the lobby at short notice.

Alleged tip secures you the pass: Another avoidable tip lets itself in the reddit comments find among others from the user Sonicdash24. With this you should be able to get your pass back after the start of the raid.

Accordingly, you can create a team before the raid that does not contain any monsters or that are dead, i.e. not ready to fight. If you are now invited to a raid, you can set this team first.

If the raid finally starts, you will immediately end up in the raid lobby because of your team selection and you can see how many players you are there. If too many jumped off, you should leave the lobby at this point and end the game once and restart it to secure the pass. For Android users, leaving the lobby should be enough.

Important! We at MeinMMO cannot confirm whether this procedure actually works at the moment. Of course, we will try this tip as soon as possible and keep you informed.

If you want to be sure that you are not suddenly alone in a raid, it is best to play with people you know and with whom you can coordinate.

What is your experience of remote raids? Have you ever been left alone in the lobby and lost your pass? Or do you sometimes even leave the raid before it starts? If yes, why are you doing this? Let us know here on MeinMMO in the comments and exchange ideas with other trainers.
