Retro Gadgets on Steam: what's behind the game about soldering and tinkering with electronics

from Valentin Sattler
A new indie game in development, Retro Games, will allow players to design their own hardware and then use it. For this purpose, components can be placed, combined and programmed.

Designing and assembling your own electronic gadgets is fun, but the sourcing of parts can quickly become expensive. It would therefore be cheaper to have a game that offers the same development fun without the bills piling up before each assembly. The new Steam title is exactly in this notch vintage gadgets.

Steam game for hobbyists

According to Retro Gadgets’ Steam description, the game should allow you to design your own hardware, solder it and then play around with it. Numerous components such as joysticks, loudspeakers and displays are available for this purpose, which can be accommodated on freely formable printed circuit boards.

After developing your own device, programming is also possible: Retro Gadgets is advertised with an integration of the Lua programming language, which gives the devices their function. For example, game consoles or radios should be implemented, which can then be used independently on the Windows desktop and shared via the Steam workshop.

The actual complexity of such hardware projects is limited by that of the indie studios Licorice ehf and Studio Evil developed game but not replicated. For example, you don’t have to draw any connecting lines on the printed circuit board, and the individual pins of the components are not soldered, just individual segments of the PCB. The focus is really on the quick design, and less on the annoying side jobs.
