Youtube: UHD and 8K only for premium subscribers in the future?

YouTube annoys users with ten ads in a row

Various users report that they can no longer view YouTube content in 4K and 8K resolutions. Apparently, Youtube is conducting a test with these users – in the future, videos beyond 1440p could only be available for premium subscribers.

Advertising or would you prefer the premium subscription? Although YouTube is showing more and more advertising, the operator believes that too few people are opting for a subscription. At least that’s what various user comments suggest. Among other things on Reddit users complain that they can no longer access content beyond 1440p. 4K and 8K videos are only available to premium customers.

We viewed various 4K content on YouTube with different devices: We were able to play the videos in full resolution without a subscription. It looks as if the operators are currently conducting a test – with a small group of users as test subjects. Such a test does not have to mean that the premium restriction is really coming. However, it is close.

If you choose Youtube Premium, you can watch videos without ads, on a locked screen and while using other apps. Downloading videos is also available for users. Last but not least, the package includes Youtube Music Premium. After a free trial month, however, the monthly costs are 11.99 euros, 17.99 euros as part of a family plan and 6.99 euros for students.

Youtube Premium Lite, which only includes ad-free and costs €6.99, is only available in certain European countries. The start in Germany is still pending. It would be conceivable that the Lite version would be introduced together with the limited video resolution for non-subscribers in this country. However, YouTube would still have to communicate any dates.
