Super Mario Bros. 5: 7 years of fan tinkering with 2D Mario and you can play it yourself

In 2012, New Super Mario Bros. U was the last real 2D platformer with the plumber. Since then it has been low tide. Those who thirst for new 2D levels have to resort to the fan creations in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2. And indeed, in all the turmoil there is now a new Mario experience that fans of NES and SNES Mario games should definitely check out: Super Mario Bros. 5, a fan project that made a childhood dream come true for New Yorker MedroidMike64 , as he revealed to us in a short interview.

A classic Mario with a few twists

As a fan project, Super Mario Bros. 5 may not be an official sequel, but it comes very close. It’s designed as a classic 2D Mario that aims to pay homage to the NES and SNES titles. However, there are a few special extras to extend the classic jump and run gameplay and make the game even more interesting.

So we hop and jump with Mario & Co. not only through the 40 two-dimensional levels in eight worldswe also get it with the seven Koppalingen as Bosses, parcour puzzles and unique courses to do, for example an airship, which you can see below the world examples in a small clip:

Almost a thousand hours of hard work

So Super Mario Bros. 5 isn’t just any level, it’s a game within a game that MedroidMike64 has poured “a lot of blood, sweat and tears into” for seven years. Launched in Super Mario Maker in 2015, he later moved to the sequel released in 2019, which wasn’t that easy. The move was actually his biggest challenge:

The biggest challenge was manually transferring the courses block by block from the Wii U to the Switch. Also, removing some published courses from the server so I could continue editing them was difficult. I lost a lot of “likes” in the process.

The seven years of work are only an overriding value. He told us his Super Mario Maker playtime on Wii U is around 330 hours. With Super Mario Maker 2 it comes to a whopping 615 hours. That adds up to around 945 hours, of which he “spent about 99 percent creating the courses.”

But why all this trouble? It has been MedroidMike64’s dream since childhood to create his own Mario game. When Super Mario Maker came out, it was a dream come true for him. “But it wasn’t until the World Creator update came out for SMM2 that my dream actually became a reality,” he revealed. This makes it possible to combine the individual levels on world maps, which is what makes a “game” like Super Mario Bros. 5 possible.
