FIFA 23 is out of Early Access and available now. While the press and critics give good ratings, many fans are disappointed.

VANCOUVER – EA Sports always has a tough job ahead of them with a new FIFA. Fan expectations often go in many different directions, and trying to please each and every player proves to be a tricky task. FIFA 23 now has completely different expectations, especially because it is the last game under this name for EA Sports. At the release of FIFA 23, opinions are divided again – the tests and ratings of the critics are good, but many fans are disappointed again.

FIFA 23 tests and ratings: Official reviews show satisfied press

This is what the press says: The first reviews of FIFA 23 trickled in on September 30th, the same day that the game celebrated its worldwide release. Meanwhile, the aggregate platform Metacritic has over 30 tests that average 77/100. At the site OpenCritic, the game is even one point higher. So many of the bigger gaming websites have had good things to say about FIFA 23, often seeing ratings as high as a 7/10 or even higher. Here you can see the ratings at a glance:

  • FIFA 23 on Metacritic: 77/100
  • FIFA 23 at OpenCritic: 78/100
  • IGN: 7/10
  • Games Radar+: 80/100
  • Game Pro: 80/100
  • Play3: 8/10
  • PC Games: 7/10

Above all, the atmosphere of FIFA 23, as well as the ball physics through Hypermotion2 and the amount of content are things that are always well received by the critics. However, there are often point deductions for the still controversial “Ultimate Team” mode, for which individual streamers in FIFA 23 have already spent more than 16,000 euros. In addition, many members of the press feel that some moments feel like FIFA 23 is scripting the matches.

In general, FIFA 23 is fairly average in the press ratings. For the past four years, most FIFA matches have had scores somewhere between 72 and 83 points. The fan ratings on Metacritic, on the other hand, once again paint a completely different picture.

FIFA 23 tests and ratings: Still numerous complaints, at least fewer than 2021

Here’s how fans are tearing up FIFA 23: Among the players, the big football simulation of the year does not go down well at all. On Metacritic, the fans’ review average is just an average of 2.5/10. The negative reviews seem to find criticism for almost every part of the game, from the shortcomings in career mode to the too high game speed to bugs. For many, the focus of the complaints is again Ultimate Team.

  • Fut 23 is not playable without a meta player. These players are expensive and you would have to invest at least 200€ in packs in addition to the game. EA is and will always be a carnival club—TommyBoy1984
  • This game is anything but a football simulator, sad to see what the franchise has become, Ultimate Team is a Slot Machine.– VinniM0ra
  • The game physics just feels weird, plus all the bugs that shouldn’t be there after a year of development. Waste of my money– Rock4Dog

Especially on the PC, many players have some problems in the first days after the release. A nasty anti-cheat bug in the PC version of FIFA 23 renders the game virtually unplayable for some fans. EA has at least publicly confirmed this bug and is already working on a fix that should come via update in the next few days. That alone shouldn’t make FIFA 23 a better game for many fans.
