The PlayStation 5 is just one step away from jailbreaking

A PS5 jailbreak is lurking around the corner.

A PS5 jailbreak is lurking around the corner.

The PlayStation 5 was discovered by hackers and Google security experts quite a while ago Andy “theflow” Nguyen crackedby exploiting a vulnerability in the Blu-ray player’s software. So far, however, his method has not led to a publicly accessible jailbreak. However, that may soon change with another discovery which was disclosed a few days ago. We explain to you what exactly has been achieved and why it is not yet a “real” jailbreak of the PS5.

This is a jailbreak: A jailbreak will override much of the security that Sony has put in place to ensure that only officially recognized code runs on the PS5. Hackers try to circumvent these locks in order to make self-written programs such as games and apps run on the console.

Two hurdles have been cleared

Three barriers must be overcome to jailbreak the PS5, two of which have currently fallen. A vulnerability in the Internet browser has been known for a long time because it could be transmitted directly from the PS4. This means that the environment within which users can normally act can be left. The error in the software of the Blu-ray player mentioned at the beginning works in a similar way.

Here you can find more about the Blu-Ray hack:

Both methods open the door to an attack on the system core: The so-called kernel manages all processes of an operating system. Due to the central importance of the system core, it is specially protected, which makes it very difficult to inject your own code. This is now possible by exploiting a vulnerability in the Java programming language which has already led to a jailbreak on the PS4 and surprisingly overlooked on the PS5.

Based on these findings, it is possible to develop a jailbreak that can be performed in two different ways – via the browser or via a manipulated Blu-Ray. It is not yet possible to say which is better, but the variant via the Internet browser is still very unstable and, according to one person involved in the development, is only successful in almost 30 percent of all attempts.

In addition, one cannot speak of a complete jailbreak at the moment, since only read and write access is gained to a limited extent. However, this can at least unlock the settings for developers, as mod developer Lance McDonald documents:

For example, games can be installed from a USB drive via the hidden menu, but cannot be started without a corresponding license in the account. For a “real” jailbreak, there is no option to play self-developed games and apps or to modify PS4 titles.

Bloodborne is a good example of the possibilities that mods offer. More about this here:

The biggest barrier still stands

In order to be able to run games, apps and modifications, the so-called “hypervisor” would still have to be switched off or bypassed. It isolates programs from the rest of the system, so to speak, and determines which parts of the main memory can be read by a game or an app.

Because of these locks, leading hackers find it extremely difficult to crack the PS5 in its entirety. In any case, one should not expect that one can act as flexibly as on the PS4, the security measures of the PS5 are too strict for that. Information about the PS4 jailbreak can be found here:

A jailbreak would bring interesting functions, but also serious disadvantages

As already mentioned, self-developed or modified games and apps can be started on the console with a jailbreak. Titles that were removed from the PlayStation Store or are still being kicked out also stayed with us in the long term. One such example from the past is the legendary PT demo, which is still hugely popular with horror fans eight years after its release.

PT is one of the scariest horror experiences in years. Just not on the PS5, as Sony is actively blocking the game from launching.

In addition to in-house developments, software piracy is also an issue, after all, the console cannot distinguish between a pirated copy and a fan project. We would like to point out that the acquisition, production and distribution of pirated copies are punishable in Germany. The jailbreak itself, on the other hand, is not yet illegal, since the hardware you buy is only modified as lawyer Christian Solmecke emphasizes on YouTube.

You don’t need to be afraid of cheaters: A jailbreak can only be performed on both the PS5 and PS4 in conjunction with an outdated version of the system software. So far, it has been assumed that in the case of the Blu-Ray method, version 4.50 from December 2021 is the most suitable for a jailbreak; when using the browser, it is version 4.03, which was released in October 2021. With the updates that followed, the gap was closed.

However, access to the PlayStation Network always requires the latest version, and it is not possible to switch back to a lower version. Therefore, it is impossible for you to be annoyed by cheaters who have cracked your console in multiplayer games on PS5.

More PS5 news:

Conversely, of course, this also means that with a jailbreak you can no longer access many functions of the PS5 that require an online connection. Many new releases can also only be played with up-to-date system software, including highlights such as Elden Ring, Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7. As interesting as a jailbreak would be – who would want to do without such hits?

If you could wish for a mod for one of your favorite PlayStation games, what would it change?
