Blizzard boss says: Hackers are to blame for the fact that you can't play Overwatch 2

The release of Overwatch 2 was overshadowed by issues that locked many players out of the new shooter. However, where some fans have suspected a failure on the part of Blizzard, the cause is apparently to be found in an attack from outside.

This is how the launch went: Overwatch 2 was released almost an hour before the planned release time and was playable from around 8:00 p.m. German time on Tuesday, October 4th. In our special you will find all information about the launch of Overwatch 2.

At the beginning, the servers were still largely stable and many were able to log in. For the official release, shortly before 9:00 p.m., there were more queues and problems with the server connection. Over 40,000 players wanted to play at the same time.

Fans were greeted with long waits and repeated disconnects. Some even scoffed at it being Overwatch 2’s “secret subtitle” (via reddit). In addition, many players were missing tons of cosmetics from Overwatch 1 and the shop did not work properly.

Blizzard itself published a list of known issues in the official forum.

The boss says: The new Blizzard boss announced on Tuesday evening Mike Ybarra on Twitter to word. It said the Overwatch team was working on the issues, and later:

Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing a mass DDoS attack on our servers. The teams are working hard on a mitigation/resolution. This causes a lot of losses and connection problems.

A DDoS attack, short for “Distributed Denial of Service,” usually occurs when bad guys intentionally overload a network with too many requests. This can be done with botnets, for example.

The corresponding service, here the Overwatch server, can no longer keep up and there are slow connections, lags or crashes. Often such attacks are simply malicious with no aim other than to disrupt.

Second DDoS attack on Wednesday: “We are working on it”

This is the current status: Today, on Wednesday, October 5, at 8:00 a.m., there will again be waiting times and queues of over 5,000 players. Anyone hoping to gamble something before the evening will probably have to wait longer.

Aaron Keller, the game director and successor to Jeff Kaplan, explained in one Tweet from 6:30amthat a second DDoS attack followed. We are making progress and continue to work on a solution, but we ask for patience.

What the players say: News of the attack hasn’t apparently reached all players yet, and complaints about queues persist. In the corresponding thread on reddit about the DDoS attacks, however, anger at the hackers is the main issue.

The user Mjolnir17 sums up the mood of many fans: “Why are people like this? I don’t care if you like the game or not, but why ruin it for others?”

Whether the problems can be fixed in the course of the day, we cannot yet say with certainty. If you still want to prepare for your first rounds, we have put together some tips for you:
