Overwatch 2: SMS protection will be partially disabled

Activision Blizzard: Phil Spencer pleased with acquisition progress

To allow more players to play Overwatch 2, SMS protection requirements will be partially disabled.

Overwatch 2’s launch on Tuesday was marked by frustrated players waiting in long queues. But it wasn’t necessarily the huge rush on the successor to Overwatch, but DDoS attacks on the game servers.

Regarding the necessary SMS protection for Overwatch 2, which requires players to enter a valid phone number in their Battle.net account, Blizzard Entertainment has announced some changes.

The majority of players no longer need to enter a number if they have a connected Overwatch account. This affects those who played before June 9, 2021.

New accounts and those not previously connected to Battle.net will not be affected. You must provide a number to meet SMS protection requirements.

The change is expected to take effect on Friday.

The developer is also working on login queues, server crashes and stability issues. Since they are all connected, they will be treated together, they say. Until then, short and long queues may still occur, although changes have already been made to reduce the time.
