Beyond Good & Evil 2 sets a Guinness record – and it sucks
Duke Nukem Forever has long held the record for the longest game in development, but Beyond Good & Evil 2 has now surpassed that “achievement”. How long are we waiting now?
The Guinness World Records book records not only admirable achievements, but also rather depressing records. For example, that Duke Nukem Forever was the game with the longest development time. Emphasis on “was” because another game has since surpassed that lousy milestone: Beyond Good & Evil 2.
That’s how long Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been in development
Because there were 5,156 days between the announcement of Duke Nukem Forever and its release in 2011. Beyond Good & Evil 2 (buy now ) was unveiled for the first time at a press event in May 2008 with a teaser trailer featuring series darling Pey’j. Since then, 5,243 days have passed – so the record was clearly surpassed. And there is still no release date for Beyond Good & Evil 2, so the distance to the 3D Realms game Duke Nukem is only getting bigger and bigger.
In the years following the 2008 teaser, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been very quiet, with only repeated confirmations that the project has not been discontinued. For comparison: News author Matthias was an intern at Computec for the first time in 2010, when it was already about the fact that it was so quiet about Beyond Good & Evil 2 … A sign of life finally followed at E3 2016, and then with one elaborate CGI trailer at E3 2017:
And there was also an impressive CGI trailer at E3 2018, but again it didn’t show any real gameplay or in-game graphics:
Series creator has since left
The creator of Beyond Good & Evil and lead developer for the sequel – Michel Ancel – has meanwhile even left the team and the entire industry behind at the end of 2020. He wants to devote himself entirely to his work in an animal sanctuary. Other reports indicate that he dropped out as part of investigations into toxic behavior in the workplace. However, Ancel denies this view of things, saying that it is not about the truth.
It will probably be a few more years before Beyond Good & Evil 2 appears. But even then, it probably doesn’t live up to expectations for a game that’s been in development for over 15 years. Shouldn’t the sticker be pulled by Ubisoft at some point? Are you still looking forward to the game at all? Write us in the comments!
