PlayStation 5: Acquisitions support development studio growth

Activision Blizzard: Phil Spencer pleased with acquisition progress

PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst doesn’t think the gaming market will be slowed down by the numerous studio acquisitions.

Acquisitions of developer studios have not been uncommon in recent years, and particularly large companies such as Microsoft, SONY, Tencent or the Embracer Group have recently been able to add numerous new studios to their portfolio.

in one interview With the French YouTuber Julien Chièze, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst has now expressed the accusation that the numerous acquisitions would consolidate video game development and thus slow down the gaming market.

Hulst emphasizes that PlayStation supports the growth of new studios and that a takeover does not mean taking a studio off the market. In addition, in his opinion, the numerous takeovers are not an arms race within the industry:

“We always work with teams that have strong creative vision that we feel fit the culture of PlayStation Studios like a glove. This is very important to us. And we actually help many of these teams to build them. We recently acquired Haven and this is our first studio in Quebec, the first studio in Canada co-founded by Jade Raymond.”

“We were really impressed by their ambition, by their creative vision, and I think bringing them on board actually allows us to help build a studio, help build a studio much faster and much more consistently than it would be possible externally. The assumption that we are taking teams off the market is not necessarily correct. Sometimes it’s quite the opposite as we help bring new studios to life that will bring wonderful new experiences to the PlayStation community.”
