RTX 4090: Manufacturers recommend series of power supplies with 1,000 watts or more

Geforce RTX 4090 unboxed: Raff unpacks the Founders Edition

from Maximilian Hohm
Nvidia’s partners have now listed their own models of the Geforce RTX 4090 including the requirements and recommend very powerful power supplies. Some stick to the 850 watt minimum, while the majority ask for 1,000 watts straight away. There are also outliers with more than 1,000 watts. Therefore, read below what each manufacturer recommends.

Since RDNA 2 and Ampere, to be able to safely operate high-end graphics cards, you often need much larger power supplies than just a few years ago with Turing or Pascal pixel accelerators. This is due, among other things, to abrupt load peaks, but also to a generally higher consumption. Power supplies with 750 watts and more were therefore already recommended for many models of the RTX 3080 and upwards. With the Geforce RTX 4090, the typical power consumption without manual intervention alone should be around 450 watts, which means that it also requires a decent power supply.

Nvidia recommends a model with at least 850 watts for a PC with a Geforce RTX 4090. This minimum is based on the assumption that the PC would otherwise use a Ryzen 9 5900X with an AM4 substructure. AMD’s current Ryzen 7000 processors from 7900x and Intel’s Alder Lake and the upcoming Raptor Lake models, on the other hand, need more power, which is why larger power supplies may also be necessary. Against this background, the information provided by Nvidia’s add-in board partner is particularly interesting.

While MSI also sticks to Nvidia’s recommendation of 850 watts for the Suprim X or Suprim X Liquid graphics cards, which mark the upper limit of the flagpole, Asus, Gigabyte and Zotac already recommend 1,000 watts for the Strix, Master and AMP Extreme Trinity. This is particularly surprising considering that Inno3D, like Zotac, belongs to PC partners and also recommends “only” 850 watts. However, Palit takes the top position by far with the recommendation for the RTX 4090 Game Rock OC. The power supply should have a total of 1,200 watts.

It is not yet clear where the large discrepancy in the recommendations comes from, but it seems certain that a properly dimensioned power supply is mandatory for the RTX 4090. With the high power consumption and the current electricity prices, buyers should think about an FPS limit and at the same time use a high-efficiency power supply to keep the power loss as low as possible.
