WoW WotLK Classic: Gearscore Addons – Which are good and what do they bring?

If you want to compare your equipment in WoW Classic, you either have to do a lot of calculations or use addons. This also applies to the new expansion Wrath of the Lich King. MeinMMO explains what you can use such addons for and how you use them.

What is Gearscore? The Gearscore is colloquially understood as the “strength” of the gear a character is wearing. The value is calculated from various attributes of your armor and weapons.

The item level of items is closely related to this. Basically, there are two major areas of application for the Gearscore and item levels:

• you can check if you meet the requirements for the Wrath of the Lich King raids, for example
• you can see better whether a new item represents a potential improvement and whether you should roll it or use up your DKP for it

There are elite players who are always looking for the absolute top groups and abuse the Gearscore for something like that. But don’t let that discourage you, if in doubt, set up your own group and use the values ​​for personal comparison.

Why do I need an addon for this? In Retail-WoW you can easily read the numbers from the equipment, but in WotLK Classic the value is hidden. The strength of items is only visible through their attributes and not everyone wants to calculate all the time.

Gearscore addons do this work for you and use a simple number to show you how “good” an item really is.

TacoTip – Gearscore addon, easily installed and used

Which addon should I use? TacoTip is currently the most popular addon for gearscores and item levels in WotLK Classic. It’s quite easy to use: After installation, you can see the score and the average item level of players on the tooltip, as well as the individual item level directly on the items.

To install, you simply have to unpack the file in your WoW folder under /_classic_/Interface/Addons or you can use an addon manager. We recommend WoWUp for addons in WoW as an alternative to Curse.

TacoTip offers you some settings. For example, you can turn on and off what exactly is shown to you in the tooltip, including:

• Character’s name, title, guild, and rank
• Target, faction and health bar
• class colors
• Gearscore and equipped item level of the character
• individual item level directly on items

We recommend the default settings. These provide you with the most important information. But keep in mind that a higher item level is not always better. However, as you play longer, you develop a better feel for items and can draw on experience to properly compare items. Otherwise don’t be afraid to ask other players.
