iOS 16: 7 settings you should change after downloading

iOS16 home screen search

With iOS 16, Apple has brought numerous new functions to the iPhone. However, not all of them make sense. We therefore present seven settings that you should change immediately after downloading.

After installing iOS 16, the new search button on the home screen catches the eye. On all iPhone models (from iPhone X and higher) you will now find the new search function between the last row of apps and the dock. With a tap on the button you can start the search on your iPhone. However, it is questionable why this is useful. Because: If you swipe your finger down from the middle of the screen, the search function will also open.

You find the double search function on the home screen unnecessary? Luckily, you can disable the feature. To do this, go to the settings. Under “Home screen” you then activate the slider next to “Show on home screen”.

No more ending calls with the side button

Who does not know the problem? When making a call, you accidentally press the side button of the iPhone and the call is automatically ended. This is annoying, but can be avoided since iOS 16. Open Settings and tap Accessibility. Under “Physical and motor” you select “Typing”. Next to “Prevent calls from ending by blocking,” turn on the toggle.

New updates don’t always deliver new features. For example, the popular battery percentage display on iPhone models without Touch ID has disappeared since 2017. With iOS 16, Apple is bringing the feature back however, you have to activate it in the settings. Go to Settings and under “Battery” enable the slider next to “Battery charge %”.

Important: Currently (as of 10/6/22) the battery percentage indicator is not displayed on the iPhone models XR, 11, 12 mini and the 13 mini. It is very likely that Apple will fix the function with iOS 16.1.

Set haptic keyboard feedback

Since iOS 16 it has been possible to set haptic keyboard feedback on the iPhone. This is especially useful for those who find the normal keystroke tones annoying when typing. In the settings under “Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback” you need to enable the slider next to “Haptics”.

Retrieve e-mails – buy more time

Thanks to iOS 16, it is now possible to retrieve sent emails. This is particularly useful if you made a mistake in the subject line or the email was sent to the wrong sender. By default, after sending the email, you have ten seconds to retrieve it.

In the settings you can extend the time to 30 seconds. Go to the Esettings to “Mail”. In the “Send” section at the bottom, tap on “Unsend Delay”. For example, select 30 seconds.

Turn off photos in the “For You” widget

Since iOS 16, the iPhone has been looking for pictures from your photo archive in order to display them in the “For you” widget on the home screen, for example. If you do not want this, you can deactivate the function. In the settings under “Photos” you can activate or deactivate the slider next to “Show recommended content” under “Reviews & recommended photos”.

View notifications as a list

You have to set the list view for the notifications manually.

Since iOS 16, notifications are displayed on the lock screen at the bottom of the screen. This cannot be changed, but you can choose from three different views. That works in the Esettings under “Notifications”. By default, the stack view is set. The notifications are stacked on top of each other. Choose Du “Number”, you only see the number of notifications. With a tap on the number you see the message. If you want the view like in iOS 15, you have to select “List”.
