LoL: G2 fly to the Worlds as superheroes - after 8 minutes they land super on their muzzles

For the European team G2 Esports there was a rough awakening at the Worlds 2022 in League of Legends: The LoL team around Midlaner Caps and Jungler Jankos showed up as superheroes in a video. But in the first match you met the world leaders, the South Koreans from DWG KIA: Midlaner Showmaker and Jungler Canyon quickly showed the Europeans their limits. Now there are doubts as to whether G2 will survive Group B of Death.

G2 allowed themselves the fun before the match: In a hype video before the start of Worlds, the G2 players showed off their new powers.

Esports journalist Jake Luckey proclaimed that G2 “was struck by lightning” and now has superpowers:

  • Jankos can now shoot lightning with his eyes and emit toxic gas
  • Caps can suddenly change shape when sipping milk

CEO Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez announced that this was the last script he approved before having to leave G2.

And the loss of the longtime CEO seemed to cast a shadow over the otherwise boisterous mood that usually surrounds the team. Somehow the worm was already in there before the start of the World Cup.

These opponents awaited them: In the 1st match at the Worlds for G2 you met DWG KIA of all people. The teams share a common past at Worlds:

  • In 2019, in the quarterfinals of Worlds, the experienced players of G2 downright destroyed the then highly talented Koreans because the young team could not cope with the pressure of Worlds. While DAMWON Gaming was extremely strong in scrims, it didn’t really convey the performance on stage.
  • In 2020 both teams met again: this time in the semi-finals of the Worlds. Now, however, DWG KIA was a year older and clearly beat G2, who then lost their leader Perkz, while DAMWON Gaming became the 2020 World Champion.

In 2021, G2 did not qualify for the Worlds at all – the again favored DWG KIA only failed by a hair’s breadth in the final at EDward Gaming.

After 8 minutes the preliminary decision came

How did the match go now? It was a very bitter match for G2:

  • The two key players of G2, Caps and Jankos, remained without their own kill – Jankos died 4 times, Caps 3 times
  • The key players of DWG KIA, Showmaker (8-0-4) and Canyon 3/0/10 remained undead themselves. They were just as dominant as feared.

The decision came early with an ace on the Rift-Herald. The game was almost decided after 8 minutes. Showmaker excels here on Azir:

A second ace at 22 minutes sealed the fate of the Europeans. DWG KIA was already 10,000 gold ahead. The game ended after 32 minutes (via dotesports).

The “chaotic endgame” that brought G2 wins so often, the team didn’t reach this time.

Afterwards, Showmaker soberly said: It is difficult to say whether G2 is a strong team or not. Because the game was very one-sided, you had a good plan for the first team fight and you pulled it through.

LoL: Worlds Anthem 2022 – STAR WALKIN’

How does it look now for G2? So-so, G2 may have beaten Evil Geniuses for the 7th time this year, who may have little chance of escaping Group B, but losing to DWG KIA hurts.

In order for G2 to survive “The Group of Death,” they must defeat and outperform an Asian team. Besides DWG KIA, there are also JD Gaming in the group and they could be even stronger than the Koreans. The Chinese defeated DWG KIA in their first match.

Jankos says in an interview (via dotesports):

The group is tough, but if you’re a good team, you get out. If we’re not a good team, we won’t get through. Would I rather play in Rogue’s or Fnatic’s group or in Group D? Yes, yes. But that doesn’t matter. If we’re good, we can do it in best-of-fives.

Pulls you down a bit when Showmaker says: Oh, I don’t hate them anymore.

After the opening loss, G2 really needs a round of super power before Worlds ends real quick.

Things are looking much better for the other two European teams Fnatic and especially Rogue.
