Meta Quest Pro: Facebook VR headset is not coming to Germany

from Rhonda Bachman
The Facebook company Meta wants to present its new VR headset Meta Quest Pro today. However, the new device will not be available in Germany. Mark Zuckerberg’s company withdrew its VR devices from the German market in 2020.

Today at 7 p.m. German time, the company’s meta-event Connect will take place. Company boss Mark Zuckerberg will also present the upcoming VR headset Meta Quest Pro. The device was in development for around two years and is intended to be a central element of the alignment with the metaverse. However, users in Germany will not have to wait for the new device from the Facebook group. In this country, the headset should not even come onto the market.

The Federal Cartel Office intervened in 2020

The Meta Quest Pro should not be sold in Germany because the Facebook group stopped its business with VR glasses in 2020. At that time, the Federal Cartel Office intervened because the company’s headsets required a Facebook account. As a result, abuse proceedings were initiated and Facebook withdrew from the German market.

“This link between virtual reality products and the group’s social network could represent a prohibited abuse of a dominant position by Facebook,” said the President of the Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt. The case against Meta is still ongoing. “The sales stop currently applies to all VR devices, including the new headset,” a meta spokesman recently confirmed to the Handelsblatt.

The headset was already available in a video before the official launch. Ramiro Cardenas from the gaming channel “Zectariuz Gaming” claims to have found the device by accident in a hotel. At unboxing, a black headset with three cameras was revealed. The original owner is said to have picked up the device in the meantime.
