WoW: Time travel plots are not a good idea!
The Dragon Isles are calling! WoW: Dragonflight will be released on November 29, 2022 and will take our heroes on a new adventure in Azeroth. We ally with the Dragon Aspects to help them reclaim their ancient homeland. With Dragonflight, the developers intend to go back to the good old days and entertain the players with simple stories. A good intention, no question. But can Blizzard turn things around when it comes to lore? And is it a good idea to put a time travel plot in the game?
Khadgar is a bronze dragon? So what?
When news broke the net recently that Khadgar was a bronze dragon, I just shrugged my shoulders. I’m already so hardened when it comes to lore in WoW that I wouldn’t have been surprised if the story about Khadgar was true. The WoW writing team has rewritten or retold the backstory so many times that even such wacky twists are no longer a big deal. After the debacle of the past few years, players take such news with humor. Shortly before the start of Dragonflight, all sorts of funny memes and games are circulating on Reddit and Co., which are already preparing the players for the coming lore catastrophe. Here’s my personal favorite – the bullshit bingo for the Dragonflight story.
Blizzard has gambled away the trust of lore fans
Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands took a heavy toll on lore fans. The number of players who opted for the history of World of Warcraft (buy now ) interested, shrank until only a hard core remained. Numerous well-known Lore experts like Pyromancer or Nobbel took a break months ago and turned their backs on the World of Warcraft story for the time being. Their confidence in Blizzard’s lore writers was so low at the time that they were less excited about how cool the Dragon Isles could be and more concerned about how Blizzard might ruin the story. I’m glad that Nobbel has now returned to entertain us again with exciting lore videos. However, his dark vision for WoW lore and his bitter words for the writing team will stay with me for a long time.
A fresh start or just empty promises?
With Dragonflight, Blizzard wants to go back to the good old days and completely do without complex stories that are told across multiple expansions in the future. Steve Danuser, WoW’s Lead Narrative Designer, has spoken in many interviews over the past few weeks about the tiresome subject of WoW lore. He explained that the writing team will entertain players in Dragonflight with simple stories. Simple stories meant to be fun for the players. The whole thing sounds like an interesting turn for WoW. But will Danuser and Co. be able to keep their promise?

Dragonflight Alpha and Beta are actually fun! When I first set foot on the Dragon Islands, I was pleasantly surprised. The stories that Blizzard tells at the beginning of Dragonflight are actually so simple that every player can understand them even without prior knowledge of lore. The developers take a lot of time on the Dragon Isles to tell the story of the Dragon Aspects. And they do it in a very casual way. So you don’t have to dig through countless lore articles and WoW books to learn more about the dragons and their mission in Azeroth.
A new narrative style that inspires many players is a good new start for WoW lore, no question. But at the latest with the story of the bronze dragonflight I have to pause for a moment. Yes, dear Lore fans, a new time travel plot is actually looming on the horizon. The Infinite Dragonflight and their leader Murozond (Nozdormu’s evil self from the future) take center stage in the Dragonflight story. Murozond is also a hot candidate for the final boss post of the upcoming WoW expansion.

of the dangers of the times
Uff, a new time travel story. If that is a good idea? Well, the mystery that surrounds Murozond in WoW has the potential for an exciting story. But so has the jailer in the past. Can Blizzard even unravel the mystery of the Eternal Dragonflight and their leader without unnecessarily confusing players?
Let’s not fool ourselves. Blizzard just doesn’t have the skills to tell time travel stories in a meaningful way. The developers have burned their fingers several times in the past on the subject of time travel. Well, you can’t tell the story of Nozdormu without mentioning Murozond. Still, I don’t think it’s a good idea to make the Infinite Dragonflight the main antagonist of the story. I’m sure the time travel plot, no matter how simplistic, will frustrate players again. Or do you have a different opinion? Want to learn more about Murozond and his dragonflight? Or are you maybe even fans of time travel plots? And if so, what fascinates you about it? Tell us in the comments!
