House of the Dragon: Thanks to huge success – HBO deal extended

George RR Martin praises the character of Viserys in the House of the Dragon series.

A series that gains viewers with each episode is rare. House of the Dragon managed to do just that, proving that even after a hated eighth season, interest in George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” world is still strong. So it’s only understandable that HBO wants to continue the success with further seasons. As has now become known, the fantasy series will be supplied with at least three more seasons. And to continue to maintain the quality of the series, a deal was struck with Ryan Condal, one of the showrunners. Find out now what that means for the future of the successful series!

According to a report by Deadline, HBO officials are very satisfied with Ryan Condal’s work. The huge success of the Game of Thrones spinoff series has now led to a new deal confirming the partnership between Condal and the broadcaster. Francesca Orsi, one of the executives at HBO, had the following to say about it:

“Ryan Condal is a unique talent. He has a magical ability to tell stories, create worlds and shape characters. And he has a deep passion and respect for the universe of George RR Martin. The many years we’ve shared with him Working together on House of the Dragon has reaffirmed our desire to expand our partnership with him now and for years to come.”

Of course, that sounds a lot like marketing talk, but the satisfaction with Condal is not unfounded either: He was and is a big fan of Martin’s books and was therefore the fantasy author’s first choice when it came to writing the books to film “Fire and Blood” into a series. “When I read the first book of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ over two decades ago, I wasn’t even sure I had the skills to be a screenwriter,” Condal said.

“I couldn’t imagine being here now, helping to create a show set in Westeros. I’m beyond happy. I’m grateful to George RR Martin for believing in me. And HBO for that for believing in me. I’m thrilled to be working with HBO to tell the next chapter in the Targaryen saga. And I hope it’s just one of many to come.”

With the last sentence he probably alludes to the hope of many fans that there could be more spin-off series for Game of Thrones in addition to House of the Dragon. “Fire and Blood,” the two-part book series on which House of the Dragon is based, not only covers the plot of the series, but also spans more than 150 years of Targaryen rule. Potential for new series would definitely be there.

After Miguel Sapochnik recently announced that he will no longer serve as showrunner for House of the Dragon season 2, Condal is set to assume the lead role. The show’s story will probably be told in four seasons, so Condal will likely be busy for the next few years. Joining Condal in season two is one of Game of Thrones’ key directors, Alan Taylor.
