Rings of Power: What is Durin’s Curse?

In the new Amazon series “The Rings of Power” we meet many new characters of the Lord of the rings-World. Some of these characters are already the subject of heated debate as to whether they will take on future popular roles. About at Halbert or the Strange – another old acquaintance could be Durin’s Bane. But who or what is that anyway?

Durin’s Bane – You can’t get past!

Well, who does that seem like? That’s right, that epic saying comes from Gandalf when he denied in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Balrog confronted in the mines of Moria. This one has a very special name: Durin’s curse or die Flame of Udûn called.

Udûn refers to the stronghold of the renegade valar Melkor. This led some of the Maiar, who were actually subordinate to the good Valar, to the dark side. Including Durin’s Curse. Melkor gave him a flaming figure and made him one of his Balrogs.

The Flame of Udûn and his Balrog brothers were in the Battle against the Valar sent. Melkor was defeated and a Destroyed most of his followers. However, some, like Durin’s Bane, hid underground, surviving through the ages.

Awakening the Balrog – A Dwarven Debt?

The genesis of Durin’s Bane goes deep into that first ages back that with Melkor’s defeat was completed and ushered in the second age.

In the second age also plays the rings of power. Here we were introduced to Durin IV and his father, the Dwarf King, reopening an old mine after working there mithril had found.

In episode 7, the conflict between Durin IV and to his father. The previously opened mines are closed again, but before that a Balrog awakens at the bottom of the mine. Is this about THE Balrog? And is he the bane of Durin because Durin raised him?

Deviations from the template

Actually, you might think that this prehistory could perfectly lead to the later events of Lord of the Rings. If you go strictly according to the literary model, the whole thing looks a bit different. Because it was the dwarves in the third agethat awakened Durin’s Bane.

As the creators of the series like here and there deviate from the original, it could be that we are dealing with the Flame of Udûn. Maybe will the final on October 14 or give information about future seasons.
