A free survival game on Steam doesn’t look pretty, but it still delights thousands of players every day

A free survival game is currently outperforming the genre competition on Steam. The amazing thing about it is that it achieves this success despite comparatively modest graphics. MeinMMO shows you which game it is about.

What game is it? Unturned is a free survival game on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The title uses classic gameplay elements from survival games. This includes, among other things, obtaining food and building a base.

In Unturned you fight against zombies, but you are not on your own. The survival game is playable cooperatively and even features online PvP.

What sets Unturned apart? Unturned doesn’t sound like anything special at first, because we already know the principle from games like DayZ and Rust. But the title, released in 2017, stands out from the crowd at first glance: It doesn’t have the slightest claim to look good graphically.

Unturned looks like someone tried to create a cross between DayZ and Minecraft. Steam user KidKinzu thinks so too, writing in his Steam review: “Minecraft? Do we have! DayZ? Do we have! Let’s throw both together and make it free to play (via Steam)!”

A real hit on Steam

How popular is Unturned? The survival game is doing pretty well, which is especially evident on Steam. There, the title has collected over 490,000 reviews since its release in 2017. Even more impressive is that a whopping 91% of these are positive.

But Unturned has not only built up solid numbers over the past few years, but can also currently convince. Over the past 30 days, Unturned has had an average of 36,000 concurrent active players. The maximum value during this period was even 92,850. The survival title even leaves popular genre competitors behind:

• ARK: Survival Evolved: 30-day high – 77,774 players (via Steam Charts)
• DayZ: High in the last 30 days – 52,106 (via Steam Charts)
• 7 Days to Die: High over the past 30 days – 35,613 (via Steam Charts)
• Valheim: High in the last 30 days – 24,612 (via Steam Charts)
• No Man’ Sky: High in the last 30 days – 17,675 (via Steam Charts)

The only survival game that currently has more players than Unturned on Steam (as of October 15, 2022, 4:00 p.m.) is Rust. While Unturned has 61,023 players, 92,647 players play Rust (via steam charts). The peak value of the survival giant was even 118,874 players in the past 30 days.
