WoW: “Magikarp uses Splash…” – Pokémon allusion in Dragonflight
Easter eggs and references to various pop culture phenomena used to be hidden on every corner in WoW. This has decreased significantly since the Blizzard scandals. In Dragonflight, however, we are presented with one of the most well-known Pokémon allusions.
For years, the Blizzard developers gave us a whole bunch of Easter eggs and all sorts of pop culture references with every new piece of content in WoW. Over time, however, the devs became more economical with it and when they then had to struggle with the sexism scandals in their own house, many references were removed again. Since then, Blizzard has been much more careful with such Easter Eggs.
InWoW (buy now ): Dragonflight but we will find some of them again if we look around carefully. Others, on the other hand, we will hardly be able to overlook. This includes the allusion to one of the most famous Pokémon ever and its “enormously strong” attack. Because in the temple of the jade snake we encounter the WoW counterpart to Magikarp.
Magikarp uses Splash and nothing happens.
Magikarp’s most famous move is surely Splash. It forms the basis of many memes and jokes. Because the official description of the Splash attack is: “This attack has no effect.”
The Talking Fish is now waiting in the Temple of the Jade Serpent. He also uses the Splash attack and uses it to attack the tank. But the effect is the same as in Pokémon. It happens… absolutely nothing.
How do you like these little nods to other games or pop culture in general? We’re big fans of Easter Eggs like this ourselves, especially since they don’t have any negative effect if you don’t understand the allusion. We would like to see more of that in WoW after the developers have held back for a long time.
