Activision Blizzard, the company behind Call of Duty (CoD) and WoW, has secured the rights to a special patent. The main aim is to improve the user experience. An AI should be responsible for this. But how exactly is that supposed to work?

A registered patent is intended to protect technical inventions or innovative products from unwanted imitation. Many of them do not necessarily make it into a final product, but some patents have made it to the PS5, at least in a slimmed-down form.

Now a patent from Activision Blizzard has been discovered, which should bring a special improvement for players. This is the soundtrack that you need to hear in-game if you haven’t turned off the music in the first place.

AI should ensure that every gamer gets to hear individual music

What is this patent? Activision Blizzard has filed a patent. The idea behind this is to use machine learning to create individual soundtracks for players. So at the end of the game, every player should hear a soundtrack that is tailored to their own situation.

What exactly is behind it? Activision Blizzard writes in the patent application of a “Dynamic[n] Generation and modulation of music based on game events, player profiles and/or player reactions.”

This means: If you are currently fighting a certain boss or are you under a lot of pressure from the game, the AI can react and play the appropriate music for you. In this way, she can emphasize your feelings or amplify emotions again.

According to the patent, the software should examine the “mood” of the place where the player is in the game and then generate appropriate music. For gamers who turn off the music right at the beginning of the game anyway, this patent should only be of little relevance. For everyone else, however, this means being able to sink even deeper into the game. In technical terms, this is called “immersion.”

It is not yet known when this AI technology will come

When will this technology come into the games? Since this is only a patent so far, it may take some time to enforce it. Manufacturers often only apply for patents and then “take their time” with the implementation.

Other interesting patents: Not all patents cause a storm of enthusiasm among gamers. So Sony had presented a patent at the time, which caused a lot of excitement. Because here the option was presented that viewers should determine who can participate in a match and who should be kicked:
