Final Fantasy 16 – Pure goosebumps: New trailer shows the powerful hybrid forms for the first time

We still have to wait a few months before we can finally play Final Fantasy 16, but now the game has at least got a new trailer that tells us almost five minutes of lore and details. There are also a few gameplay scenes towards the end that give us a proper look at the hybrid forms of the powerful Espers.

New FF16 Details: Lore, Characters, and Esper Hybrids

The first few minutes of the trailer give us some more info on the backstory of the game and reveal how bad Valisthea really is: For 1500 years now, the land has been dying and the residents are trying to gather around the life-giving mother crystals. But their power also seems to be fading and accordingly the various kingdoms are at war for the last sparks of their power.

A new Esper form

The trailer also gives us our first in-depth look at the Espers’ hybrid forms. As a reminder, the Espers in Final Fantasy 16 can only be summoned by one person at a time, called a Dominus. However, this can take different forms. So there are three ways in which the Espers can be used:

• capabilities: Clive and the other characters are able to use some of the Espers’ abilities even in their human form. For example, we could already see Clive with his Ifrit arm.
• hybrid forms: So far we’ve only been able to catch glimpses of these shapes, but in the latest trailer (starting around 3:10) we can finally see them more closely. For example, the character Benedikta, the Dominus of Garuda, can be seen with wings. And other well-known characters can also be seen briefly.
• Incantation: These are the classic Esper forms, in which they are summoned as giant creatures and can engage in kaiju-style combat.

FF16 is in the final stages of development

There is still no specific release date for Final Fantasy 16, but at least director Hiroshi Takai has given an update: According to this, the game is in the final phase of development:

Either way, we’ll have to wait a while for the release. The game is scheduled for release in summer 2023 and will be a console exclusive for PS5.
