Diablo Immortal "nerfts" an item that players paid up to €120 for: "Fans have never been so angry"

The creators of Diablo Immortal apparently made a small but serious mistake. The description of a legendary gem was incorrect. Actually, it’s not as good as many players thought, some of whom have spent hundreds of euros on it.

What is this item? Blessing of the Worthy is one of the Legendary Gems in Diablo Immortal. What’s special about it is that it’s the only gem that can be bought directly for real money. There are three different bundles in the shop:

  • Brand of the Worthy for €30.99
  • Icon of the Worthy for €42.99
  • Mark of the Worthy for €119.99

All bundles each contain at least one Gem, multiple Legendary Emblems, and Gem Power to upgrade the Gem directly. While there are other options, such as purchasing them for platinum or, more recently, crafting Legendary Gems directly at will, the bundles have always been the quickest and safest way.

Blessing of the Worthy is one of the best Legendary Gems in Diablo Immortal for many classes. At least that’s what players thought so far, which is why they allegedly bought several of the bundles and invested a lot of money.

In the video we explain exactly how Legendary Gems work:

Diablo Immortal: What are Legendary Gems? Facts and locations in 3 minutes

How is the blessing “nerfed”? Adjusting the gem is really just fixing a bug:

  • Originally, the legendary effect read: “When you take damage, you have a X% chance […] Damage equal to Y% of yours maximum to inflict life”
  • However, the effect should read: “When you take damage, you have a X% chance […] Damage equal to Y% of yours current to inflict life”

Previously, the description was only corrected when the gemstone was upgraded and thus no longer tradable. As Community Manager SinfulScribe on reddit explained, but the description should always emphasize current life.

This has always been the effect of the gemstone, despite the incorrect description. For many classes, such as barbarians, who sometimes fight on just one life point (of a possible over 100,000), the gem is almost useless.

“You should pay the money back”

The adjustment caused a huge outcry in the community. One of Diablo Immortal’s biggest content creators, Darth Microtransaction, says he’s “never seen fans so mad” (via YouTube).

On reddit, users are outraged that this is simply fraud. So-called “bait and switch selling” is a punishable offense in countries like Canada.

Blizzard can’t just treat it like an “Oopsie” error, there has to be more going on. A user approaches the matter quite matter-of-factly and demands:

While I appreciate the communication, people including myself have bought this gem believing that it scales at maximum health. Blizzard literally sold packs for real money with the wrong description. This is unacceptable […] You should compensate all boon pack buyers or at least credit them with the orb equivalent of their purchases.

Others threaten that they will simply exercise their right to call back via Google or Apple. The only danger here is that your Diablo Immortal account will be blocked because there was a chargeback. However, some would also find a forced refund appropriate given their over $1,000 investment.

Blizzard has yet to respond to the issue.

There has recently been a major controversy surrounding monetization and how some players have attempted to exploit it:
