LoL: In a hammer game 4 of the best players in the world met – only 2 got through

Everything was at stake in probably the best game of 2022 in League of Legends: In the quarterfinals of the LoL Worlds on Saturday, October 22nd, two Korean superpowers met. The current champion from Korea, Gen G., played against the 2020 World Champion, DWG KIA. And it was a treat for esports fans. Fans rave about an “Instant Classic” – a match that reminds them why they love esports.

This is Gen G. and these are its best players: Gen G. is the current champion from South Korea. For years the team was strong, but somehow boring. Their heyday seemed a long time ago: in 2017 they became world champions with “Midlaner” ambition still as “Samsung Galaxy” and Faker screwed up his 4th title, which burst into tears at the time: a legendary picture to this day.

In recent years, however, Gen G. has been the team of Ruler (23), an experienced and strong ADC. However, the team was not really spectacular: In South Korea, people talked about T1 and DWG KIA, about Gen G. actually only of secondary importance.

That changed in 2022 when Gen G. signed midlaner Chovy, a young player who is cult-worshipped by some. Chovy reunited with his old friends from Team Griffin at Gen G. and promptly became champion for the first time in his career.

In addition, the old T1 jungler “Peanut” (24) is experiencing its third spring at Gen G.

Showmaker – Playmaker: The best 1-2 combo in LoL

This is DWG KIA and these are their best players: Team DWG KIA became World Champion in 2020 and made it to the Worlds Final in 2021. The team has perhaps the best 1-2 combo in League of Legends in the last 3 years with Showmaker (midlane) and Canyon (jungle).

Midlaner Showmaker is a top-class player, something like a modern faker who delivers spectacular plays. The casters regularly freak out when he plays. The “Showmaker Playmaker” has become a rallying cry.

Showmaker is individually one of the strongest LoL players overbuilt.

His partner is Jungler Canyon, who dominate the 2020 Worlds with carry junglers. He himself once said with a wink that he was really just the “Graves Bot”, but Canyon has an incredible feeling for the jungle and the right moment.

When Riot Games buffed Graves of all things just before Worlds, it was a gift for Canyon.

Before 2022, however, the two lost their brilliant supporter Beryl, the ADC has also changed, but Nuguri is back in the top lane.

Epic battle spanning a full 5 games – “Instant Classic”

Was the match as good as expected? Yes, it was as good as everyone thought. Maybe even a little bit better. Stars Chovy and Showmaker dug deep into their pool of champions, proving they could play anything.

Their teams’ two co-stars, Jungler Canyon and ADC Ruler, also showed what they’ve got. Canyon played heroes like Kayn, Wukong or Viego. Ruler was on Miss Fortune, Luican and Jinx.

Gen G. won the first two games:

  • In Match 1, Chovy went berserk on Ryze, going 11-3-2 on the otherwise known terrible hero. Peanut on Maokai (1-1-13) and Lehends on Yuumi (0-0-13) formed a strong backbone for Gen G.
  • In Match 2 it was Chovy again who convinced on Yone. Peanut heavily backed him with Sejuani. Supporter Lehends teased the hated cat Yuumi for Gen G. to the max, taking 1-4-12

It looked like this was going to be a Gen G clear win streak at the time, although DWG KIA was already close in Match 2 and Match 2 was a lot closer than it looked in the end.

Showmaker Turns Momentum – Faces reverse sweep

But Showmaker hit back as “Swain” in Game 3, playing 3-0-9. Apparently Gen G. didn’t get along with that at all.

In Match 4 it was over after 25 minutes and DWG KIA was able to clearly win. Showmaker grabbed LeBlanc and played a squeaky clean 3-0-4. In the whole match, DWG KIA only gave up 2 of its own deaths – now the reverse sweep was in the air: A disgrace for Gen G. became apparent.

Here’s one of those goose bumps moments from Showmaker:

Epic battle over 45 minutes in Match 5 – Ruler wins

Who won in the end? In Match 5, Ruler’s hour had come: Gen G. proved to be the better team. With Lucian, Ruler got 6-1-6, Chovy contributed 7-2-6 as Viktor.

A daring combo of Aphelios, Kayn and Renekton didn’t pay off for DWG KIA in the end.

Ultimately, the better team prevailed against the perhaps better individuals.

Ruler gets the Quadra-Kill in the deciding Match 5 at 44 minutes and puts Gen G. on the road to victory. At a high level, milliseconds make the difference between victory and defeat:
