Phil Spencer confirms that Game Pass is slowing its growth on Xbox
The growth of Xbox Game Pass on the console is “slowing down,” according to Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer.
Speaking in WSJ Tech Live (transcribed by the journalist from The Verge Tom Warren), Spencer said that while the company is seeing the PC version of Game Pass see “incredible growth,” the console side of the business is starting to slow down.
“I’ve seen a slowdown in growth, mainly because at some point you’ve reached all the console users who want to subscribe,” he said.
Phil Spencer also says Xbox Game Pass on console has slowed down.
“We’re seeing incredibly growth on PC… on console I’ve seen growth slow down, mainly because at some point you’ve reached everybody on console that wants to subscribe.”

As of January 2022, Game Pass has more than 25 million subscribers, according to Microsoft. The company recently claimed, as part of the UK investigation into its proposed takeover of Activision, that it has an installed base of 63 million consoles.
In the same interview, Spencer claimed that Xbox Game Pass is “10-15% of (their) overall revenue” and that the service is profitable for the company.
Both Microsoft and PlayStation have said in the past that they don’t believe subscriptions will ever be the dominant model in video games.
