Phil Spencer lashes out at the Metaverse and says “It’s a poorly built video game”

The head of the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer, has issued a few words regarding the metaverse in the recent WSJ Tech Live 2022. While being interviewed at the event, he stated that it is a poorly built video game that has not yet reached its full potential.

“Today (the metaverse) is a poorly made video game. Building a metaverse that’s like a living room is not how I want to spend my time. What I see in the world of the metaverse is that we are in the early stage and that this will evolve.

Although it is rare for Phil to express himself in such an incisive way, his words are not without reason. Recently, Meta announced losses of 9 billion dollars in its last three quarters, which caused its shares to lose two-thirds of their value so far this year.

The lack of attention to the Metarverse is due to the very interactivity of the platform. Being a social network that basically serves to share news, memes, fake news and gossip. Although Meta was not conceived as a video game, the comparison cannot be avoided due to its conception of virtual space.

These statements may be an indication that Microsoft’s metaverse will not arrive in the near future. The closest approach to this technology was the forgotten HoloLens at E3 2015 and which has not been spoken of since.
