Microsoft PowerToys: Version 0.64 brings more control over running processes

from Claus Ludewig
There is a new function in the Microsoft PowerToys to see which processes are currently running and prevent a file from being deleted, for example.

With Windows 10, the free extension called PowerToys from Microsoft celebrates its comeback after it existed in the Windows 95 days. For the new edition, Microsoft relies on the developer portal Github and wants to work together with the community on useful functions that can then be included in the PowerToys on the one hand and on the other hand in other Microsoft software products. In Version 0.64 marks the debut of the File Locksmith toolto allow more control over running processes.

Configure your own keyboard shortcuts & more

You can use the context menu in File Explorer to check which process is currently preventing the deletion of a file. The corresponding task can be terminated in a new window. Another new feature is called Host File Editor and allows you to edit local configuration files to map hostnames to IP addresses. A total of 14 different tools are now included in PowerToys. You can create your own keyboard shortcuts with the Keyboard Manager. Via Video Conference Mute you can simultaneously mute audio and video with the key combination Windows and N. The microphone can be switched to mute by simultaneously pressing the Windows, Shift and A keys. Here you can set whether all microphones connected to the PC or just a specific one should be switched off temporarily.

Again and again, tools from the PowerToys find their way into Windows 11. An offshoot of the Fancy Zones is available as Snap-Assist and allows the arrangement of several windows in different layouts. The PowerToys are a Microsoft project that can be viewed publicly on Github. Users can also express their opinion there. All tools from the PowerToys have source code that can be viewed on Github and can be downloaded and used free of charge.
