Blizzard Entertainment: Phil Spencer wants to revive StarCraft

Activision Blizzard: Phil Spencer pleased with acquisition progress

Xbox boss Phil Spencer finds it exciting to think about what could happen to franchises like StarCraft in the future.

Activision Blizzard has a games catalog full of gems. Some of them have not yet experienced a new game. This includes StarCraft. Blizzard’s real-time strategy series also comes in two parts. It first appeared in 1998 and was remastered in 2017. The publication of a second part with the addition Wings of Liberty came out in 2010, so it’s been 12 years.

Phil Spencer spoke to Wired about a possible StarCraft revival. Since the acquisition is not yet complete, the head of the gaming division at Microsoft initially said:

“The first thing I would say is that I’m not allowed to make decisions about what happens at Blizzard or Activision or King. So these are all just conversations and reflections on the opportunities that are out there.”

Speaking of Blizzard’s legacy for real-time strategy games, Spencer said that “StarCraft was a seminal moment in gaming. From an esports perspective, from a real-time strategy perspective on console, and just from a real-time strategy narrative perspective in the genre.”

Spencer seems to be choosing his words carefully, as he can’t make any commitments until the deal is sealed. But he finds the thought of what might happen to some brands exciting. With the teams, he will look at the back catalog and examine the possibilities, which should not only affect StarCraft.

“I’m looking forward to sitting down with the teams at Activision and Blizzard and King and talking about the back catalog and the opportunities we might have. I’ll dodge the question and just say it’s not something I can actively work on at the moment. But the thought of thinking about what could happen to these franchises is pretty exciting for me as someone who has spent a lot of hours playing these games.”
