There is a big change coming for football fans next year. Because EA’s virtual kicker is then no longer called “FIFA”, but trades under “EA Sports FC” because the license no longer exists. It has long been clear that the world football association FIFA will cook its own soup in the future, and it is now also known which titles will appear under the new flag.

FIFA has now announced a total of four games that, unsurprisingly, will appear as part of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. But as you’ve probably already gathered from the title of this article, there’s a direct setback for us consoleros. Because none of these titles will initially be released for PlayStation, Xbox or Switch.

Four web 3.0 based soccer experiences

Instead, FIFA has decided to rely entirely on Web 3.0 games, which are blockchain-based. In memory of: Blockchains are networks of decentralized databases that are not controlled by any individual or company. The controversial NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are also based on such blockchains. And it is precisely on this platform or the applications in it, which is often referred to as the “new generation of the World Wide Web”, that FIFA will publish the following titles:

  • AI League: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Edition (on Altered State Machine)
A comparatively classic 4v4 football game in which players can also create their own teams. It is played in stadiums all over the world.
  • FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (in the Uland Metaverse)
Less a game, but more of a kind of marketplace where you can buy and exchange digital items such as memories of previous World Cups. Replicas of the World Cup stadiums can also be visited here.
  • Matchday Challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Edition
A card-based game that aims to emphasize the social aspect with leaderboards.
  • FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (on Phygtl)
A mobile app that lets you create digital content and, thanks to augmented reality elements, bring things like the World Cup trophy into your “real” environment via the camera.

Disclaimer on the FIFA World Cup in Qatar: At this point we would like to draw attention to the difficult circumstances that not only led to the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, but also to the organisation, preparation and staging of the tournament. For more information, we recommend the ZDF report “Qatar secret’, in which sports journalist Jochen Breyer and author Julia Friedrichs address important questions about the World Cup on site.

Implementation for console unlikely

You’ve already noticed that these aren’t “classic” football games in the style of the current FIFA 23, but rather “experiences” that you can have about the World Cup in Qatar via the Web 3.0 applications. Console versions aren’t mentioned in the official press release, and given the nature of the “games,” we don’t expect them to be made for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or PC.

If you want to deal with the World Cup in a traditional football way, or if you want to replay it, there is of course still an option. Because the free World Cup update is available for FIFA 23 today, you can find all the important information about it in the article.
