Why you should currently buy a graphics card from AMD instead of Nvidia

Black Friday, Amazon and Co’s CyberWeek are just around the corner and many want to buy a graphics card. But if you want to buy a graphics card, you could now find good deals, especially at AMD.

If you want to play current games, you need a graphics card with decent performance. Because the GPU takes over important tasks, such as rendering graphics, when you are gaming.

If you are currently considering buying a new graphics card for Black Friday or CyberWeek, you could find what you are looking for at AMD. MeinMMO explains why you should take a special look at “Team Red”.

This is especially true for gamers who want to buy another graphics card this year and don’t want to wait for the RX 7000 or RTX 4000 anymore.

With RX 6000 graphics cards, AMD is a real price-performance tip

What is the current situation? Both AMD and Nvidia have now presented their latest graphics cards. But these cards are either so expensive that the players go on the barricades, or are not yet officially available in stores. And the majority of our users are not willing to pay more than 800 euros for a graphics card in 2022.

At the moment you should take a look at the available graphics cards and there is a potent selection with the RTX 3000 series and the RX 6000 series. AMD has also lowered the prices for the RX 6000 series to make room for the next generation.

Which graphics cards are currently particularly worthwhile? You can save a lot of money with AMD graphics cards, especially in the middle class and in the lower high-end range. In other words: If you mainly want to play in Full HD (1080p) or are interested in WQHD (1440p), you will currently find the better price-performance ratio with AMD (via geizhals.de):

  • If you want to buy a graphics card for Full HD, you pay around 330 euros for the RX 6600 XT. For the comparable RTX 3060, more than 400 euros are due.
  • Anyone looking for a WQHD graphics card is currently paying around 500 euros for the RX 6700 XT. For the comparable GeForce RTX 3070 you pay at least 100 euros more, depending on the model and availability.
  • Similar price differences apply in 4K: For an RX 6900 XT you currently pay around 750 euros, for the similar RTX 3080 you pay at least 850 euros.

A similar picture emerges if you want to pay attention to efficiency with the current electricity prices: AMD’s 6900 XT is more efficient than the RTX 3090, but Nvidia’s mid-range GPUs are slightly better. In the budget range (RX 6500 XT), AMD again offers the more efficient cards. Nvidia slightly outperforms AMD in performance per watt, but AMD wins in performance per dollar.

Nvidia offers features that AMD (still) lacks

Where is Nvidia still ahead? You should be aware that Nvidia continues to have the edge in certain areas when it comes to graphics cards:

  • Ray tracing performance from Nvidia graphics cards is better than AMD GPUs, although the Radeon models are slowly but surely closing the gap
  • Nvidia’s DLSS technology is currently even better than AMD’s FSR technology. But AMD has caught up a lot with FSR 2.0 and should further reduce the gap with FSR 3.0.
  • Certain software suites, such as Blender, currently require an Nvidia graphics card (via blender.org).

You should keep these differences in mind. If you are not interested in ray tracing or DLSS and do not need your graphics card for professional rendering, then from our point of view AMD is often the better offer when you want to upgrade when you compare the RTX 3000 and RX 6000.
