OBS Studio 28.1: AV1 acceleration through NVENC encoder on RTX 4000

from Maximilian Hohm
The new version of OBS Studio adds support for the RTX 4000 graphics card along with the new NVENC encoder. This should allow the Ada graphics cards to use their dual AV1 encoder, which should be able to convince with high performance. Therefore, read below why this feature is interesting and how you can also have AV1 encoding cheaper.

OBS has certainly long been a household name for those who stream with their PC instead of just gaming. However, gameplays cannot be streamed with the tool, but can also be recorded in high bit rates. This typically requires a lot of power, an optimized bit rate for recording/streaming or an encoder that results in hardly noticeable performance drops due to hardware acceleration. In its latest version, OBS Studio has therefore implemented support for AV1 recordings with Nvidia’s NVENC encoder on RTX 4000 graphics cards.

So far, the Geforce RTX 4090 is the only released model of the new Ada Lovelace graphics card generation and comes with a dual AV1 encoder. This is now the eighth generation of NVENC encoders, which according to the manufacturer are twice as fast as conventional H.265 encoders and support AV1. So far, however, AV1 encoding only works with the color modes NV12 (8-bit, 4:2:0) and P010 (10-bit, 4:2:0). AV1 encoding requires faster hardware than HEVC, but does not charge royalties, which explains its popularity.

In several independent tests, however, it has now been possible to demonstrate up to 30 percent higher efficiency with AV1 compared to H.265, while at the same time the image quality was better. This should further increase the popularity of the format. However, users who want to try out AV1 do not have to buy a Geforce RTX 4090 right away, but can also rely on one of Intel’s new GPUs, which also support the format. The Arc A380 or an Arc A750 or A770 would be suitable for this.

Apart from the AV1 support, bug fixing was carried out in the new OBS version, which is mainly intended to stop OBS crashes. In addition, it should now also be possible to record without problems under DX9 with Windows 11 22H2 and several UI problems have been addressed, so that OBS Studio should be more user-friendly.
