God of War Ragnarök: How to pet the wolves and get the ‘Best Friends’ trophy

Atreus is far less animal-shy than Kratos.

Atreus is far less animal-shy than Kratos.

In God of War Ragnarök there are also animal companions this time, but they only pull your sled. Nevertheless, the two wolves Speki and Svanna are extremely cute, so it’s no wonder that Atreus is close to them. Kratos, on the other hand, keeps his distance from the tame four-legged friends at first. No matter how long we pace in front of them, the game just doesn’t give us a chance to pet their fur. It looks so soft though. Here we explain how you can still spark Kratos’ love for animals and get the “Best Friends” trophy.

You must first earn the love of the wolves

You don’t get this trophy automatically during the game, you have to actually work for it. But that’s also on purpose, as game director Eric Williams explained to us in an interview before the release when we were asked why Kratos couldn’t pet the wolves at first:

We have here [Anm .d. Red.: bei SIE Santa Monica] a tradition for such things. We know everyone wants it, but you have to earn it first.

Warning, spoilers! We won’t reveal any details about the outcome of the corresponding quest here, but at least how you start it. In any case, we recommend that you play through them yourself.

If you want to interact with the wolves, you must first reach the “Lake of the Nine” with Kratos during the game. For the appropriate favor “Animal Instincts” to start, you have to wipe out one of the four bandit camps here. The easiest way to reach the camp is at the end of a short path, right next to the elevator to Týr’s Temple. Liberate the other three camps as well and you will be rewarded with a short cutscene and also earn the “Best Friends” trophy.

If you just want to watch the scene (although we really recommend playing it yourself), you can do so here:

Secret Wolf Scene

At this point we want one more spoiler alert pronounce, because this additional scene only gets enough after the end of the story. If you haven’t gotten that far yet, don’t read any further if you don’t want to be spoiled. It is not necessary for the trophy.

After the end of the story, you have the opportunity to return to many of the worlds. If you want to go back to Jötunheim, you must first pick up the corresponding World Seed from Ratatöskr. Then you can travel to this world again and meet and pet a great friend there. You can watch the scene here too.

Have you completed the favor yet? What do you think of the scene?
