A detailed summary of the change in Title Update 4 can be found here:

Why you should try new formations: After so many changes to the gameplay and meta of FIFA 23, it’s advisable to adjust your line-up to fit the tactics. Because not every formation that worked wonderfully just a few weeks ago must now lead to success.

In detail we show you the following 3 formations:

3 Pro formations and tactics after the update

What are these formations? We show you 3 formations of FIFA pros, each with different approaches to the game that can provide you with a foundation for your teams. So see which tactic suits your playing style and your cards.

5-2-1-2 – Very strong defensively, but still dangerous

This is what makes the formation: The five-man chain ensures defensive stability and opens up many attacking opportunities with the offensive full-backs. You also have a strong storm with 2 attackers and an attacking midfielder.

However, you should only call the full-backs on the offensive in the match with the quick tactics (d-pad) instead of using them offensively from the start. This prevents you from offering too many free spaces at the back.

Use these tactics and instructions: YouTuber and FIFA pro Mirza Jahic (via YouTube) relies on these settings:

  • defensive
    • Balanced
    • 50 width
    • 71 depth or 45 if it’s too offensive
  • offensive
    • Balanced
    • Runs to the top
    • 71 width
    • Player in penalty area: 7
    • Corners: 1
    • free kick 1

Also change the following instructions (all others remain on default)

  • RV and LV: Stay behind when attacking and Run Type: Overlapping
  • Offensive ZM: stay behind when attacking, for crosses in the penalty area, all freedom
  • Defensive CM: stay behind when attacking, cross into the penalty area, cover the middle
  • ZOM: Stay ahead
  • Striker 1: Defense overrun, stay ahead
  • Striker 2: Defense overrun

4-2-2-2 – Balanced formation with a tight offense

This is what makes the formation: The 4-2-2-2 is a very balanced formation that is currently working really well again in FIFA 23. It offers a stable back four and brings a strong and compact attack with the two attacking midfielders and the two at the top.

Use these tactics and instructions: STYLO from Focus Clan (via YouTube) relies on these settings:

  • defensive
    • Balanced
    • 45 width
    • 55 depth
  • offensive
    • Balanced
    • Direct Passes
    • 50 width
    • Player in penalty area: 5
    • Corners: 3
    • free kick 3

Also change the following instructions (all others remain on default)

  • RV and LV: Stay behind when attacking
  • Both ZOM: Reinforce defensive
  • Both ZDM: Stay behind when attacking, cover the middle

4-2-3-1 – With a stable defense to success

This is what makes the formation: The 4-2-3-1 is a slightly more defensive formation that specializes in countering the opponent. You only play with one striker here, but this is supported by 3 attacking midfielders.

The best approach with this formation is to manage the game and switch offense with pace at the right moment.

Use these tactics and instructions: STYLO from Focus Clan (via YouTube) relies, in addition to the 4-2-2-2, on the 4-2-3-1 and the following settings:

  • defensive
    • Balanced
    • 45 width
    • 55 depth
  • offensive
    • Balanced
    • Direct Passes
    • 50 width
    • Player in penalty area: 5
    • Corners: 3
    • free kick 3

Also change the following statements (all others remain on “default”)

  • RV and LV: Stay behind when attacking
  • Medium ZOM: Reinforce defensive, for crosses into the penalty area
  • Outer ZOMs: Reinforce defensive
  • Both ZDM: Attacks stay behind, cover middle
  • Goalkeeper: Cross catcher

Of course, there are plenty of other formations that could be worthwhile depending on your playstyle.
