Battlefield can't keep up with Call of Duty, says Sony

The documents that have been made public as part of Microsoft’s review of the planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard give us further interesting insights.

Among other things, we learn how Sony views Call of Duty’s competition from Battlefield.

No competition

In short: You probably don’t think much of Battlefield as a CoD competitor. The success of Call of Duty is “not reproducible”, is it[called.

Battlefield is a big rival to the CoD series, but “can’t keep up”.

More on the subject:

“Call of Duty is too strong for any competitor, no matter how well equipped, to catch up to.”

“It’s been the best-selling game in almost every year for the past decade, and it’s by far the best-selling game in the first-person shooter genre. Other publishers don’t have the resources or know-how to match that success.”

“To give a concrete example: Electronic Arts – after Activision one of the largest third-party developers – has been trying for many years to create a competitor to Call of Duty with its Battlefield series,” writes Sony. “Despite the similarities between Call of Duty and Battlefield, the Battlefield franchise doesn’t quite match.”

Battlefield 2042, the latest installment in the series, definitely didn’t get off to a good start, although developer DICE has been trying to turn things around since launch.

It’s one of many arguments Sony is using to prevent Microsoft from acquiring Activision Blizzard.
