Nerd in the Dirt: Trymacs and Co. in Finland – snow flurries in Ivalo

Where is Nerd in the Dirt held? Trymacs and his streamer colleagues ended up in Ivalo – as you can see from his Instagram story. Ivalo is a small settlement in Finnish Lapland that is home to around 3,400 people. As part of the municipality of Inari, the place is located on the third largest lake in Finland – the Inarijärvi. From there, the internet stars will stomp through the unforgiving cold to traverse the arctic climate zone

Where do you go? It is not yet known where the journey will take us. In these areas, residents tend to wear double layers of clothing when venturing into the wilderness in sub-zero temperatures. A layer of breathable thermal underwear (mainly merino wool) is often followed by another layer. If it’s not that cold, “normal clothing” can be worn here, usually with a thermal overall.

In addition to a hat and face shield, lined shoes with a waterproof sole that work down to at least -40 degrees are a good choice. Two pairs of socks are often worn in it. Also the first pair to conduct moisture to the outside if necessary and another (e.g. made of wool) to achieve further heat insulation.

At very low temperatures, ski clothing (e.g. snowboard pants and jacket) can be worn under the thermal suit instead of “normal clothing”. The Finns say: “The body always copes with heat somehow and in a pinch you open a few zippers. But if you get cold in the wild, you have a problem.”
