PCIe 5.0: NVMe M.2 SSDs are late

from Alexander Pensler
Actually, the first PCIe 5.0 SSDs should have been on the market since September, matching the release of the AMD Ryzen 7000 processors. It is now the end of November, but there is still no sign of the new SSDs. Manufacturer Phison has since spoken out in a press release about the delay.

At this year’s Flash Memory Summit, AMD and Phison already showed the new E26 PCIe 5.0 flash memory controller for NVMe M.2 SSDs, which in combination with the recently released AMD Ryzen 7000 processors and a PCIe 5.0 -SSD achieved impressive data transfer rates. The new flagship memory controller achieved read rates of up to 12.5 GB/s with a memory bandwidth of 2,400 MT/s. The higher quality 3D TLC flash memory is used for the PCIe 5.0 SSDs that have not yet been released.

Phison misses the September/November launch period

In a blog post on May 17, 2022, the manufacturer indicated that it would start mass production of PCIe 5.0 SSDs in the third quarter, which corresponds to the period from July 1 to September 30. But we are now almost at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022 and retailers still do not list PCIe 5.0 SSDs in their assortment.

The delay could be related to a new manufacturing technique of SSDs with PCI Gen 5 standard. Phison uses a unique particle technology to produce the NAND memory.

Still no information on the release of the PCIe 5.0 SSDs

In a recently published blog entry, Phison only writes that it won’t be able to offer new SSD products until next year. So it remains to be seen when SSDs that support the E26 PCIe 5.0 flash memory controller will appear. It looks like we’ll have to wait until the new year with that.
