Anyone who wants to buy titles from Microsoft Game Studios next year will have to dig deeper into their pockets than before. Microsoft has announced pricing for first-party titles starting in 2023 from just under 60 to just under 70 dollars. The first titles that will be affected are Starfield, Redfall and Forza Motorsport, whose releases are announced for the first few months of next year.

Microsoft also commented on the reasons. Like a speaker to IGN explained that the new price “reflects the content, the size and the technical complexity of these titles”. It was also pointed out that all three titles mentioned above will appear in Game Pass immediately upon release. However, its price will not be increased for the time being.

It was only a matter of time

There have already been a number of indicators for the price increase that has now been announced in the past few weeks and months. It was only in October that Xbox boss Phil Spencer commented on a possible increase in the subscription costs for Game Pass and already held out the prospect of turning the price screw at some point.

I think at some point we’ll have to raise the prices of certain things, but this holiday season we thought it was important to keep the prices the same.

So it fits exactly, because the prices for first-party titles only increase after the Christmas business, just in time for the turn of the year. You can find more background on this in our article.

Will Xbox Game Pass get more expensive? Boss Phil Spencer comments on price increases

On Sony’s PS5, next-gen titles have been more expensive for 2 years

Microsoft has been able to keep game prices stable for a long time, but a competitor has been pricing next-gen titles higher since 2020. Because well before the release of the PS5 in November two years ago, Sony announced that titles like the Demon’s Souls Remake or Spider-Man Miles Morales would cost 70 dollars instead of the previous 60 dollars.

So far only for the USA: In Germany, sometimes even 80 euros have to be put on the table for new PS5 titles. So far, the price increase for Xbox games has only been announced for the US area, there are still no statements about the German market or euro prices. We have asked Microsoft Germany for a statement and will update the article as soon as we receive an answer.
