Renowned Japanese singer-songwriter Ichiro Mizuki has passed away

Today is a sad day for many anime and TV series fans as it has been announced that Ichiro Mizuki has passed away.

According to the press release shared via Mizuki-san’s official Twitter account, he passed away on December 6 due to lung cancer, which was discovered in late April. He was 74 years old.

Since then, he had been in and out of hospitals undergoing radiation therapy, and despite the severity of his condition, he worked hard throughout the treatment to stay active until the very last moment. Just a few weeks before his death, Mizuki-san appeared on Japanese television in the progbranch “Anison Days”.

Also know as “The Emperor of Anime Songs”, Ichiro Mizuki is an absolute legend to many anime fans of the older generation. Since his debut in 1968, he has performed the theme song for many extremely popular anime such as Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Space Pirate Captain Harlock and many more.

In 2000, he formed the group called “Jam Project” with other anime song singers such as Hironobu Kageyama, Eizo Sakamoto, Masaaki Endoh, and Rica Matsumoto.

Of course, he also worked in video games, for example, performing the song “Robomi no Uta” for Cygames’ super-popular mobile title Granblue Fantasy.

Mizuki-san was also a playmate. He often talked about his gaming habits, including spending 3,155 hours playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

As a fan who literally grew up on Ichiro Mizuki’s songs, I will certainly miss his voice. Rest in peace, Emperor.
