Need for Speed Unbound: Interview with Criterion Games Creative Director

Need For Speed Unbound Creative Director Kieran Crimmins answered a few questions in an interview with XboxDynasty.

We at XboxDynasty were fortunate enough to interview Kieran Crimmins, creative director of Need For Speed Unbound, and unfortunately the answers got lost in internet nirvana. After extensive searches, the answers turned up. So we are happy to present our Need For Speed Unbound Interview to you today.

Please introduce yourself and tell our XboxDynasty.com readers what your job is.

Hi, I’m Kieran Crimmins, Creative Director at Criterion Games. As Creative Director, I’m ultimately responsible for the gaming experience. I work with a combination of any craft, art, audio and design. All with the aim of giving our players the greatest possible emotions.

Please briefly describe the game and explain what Xbox players can expect.

Need for Speed Unbound is the next generation of street racing where players start at the bottom and fight their way to the top of the scene to win The Grand, Lakeshore’s ultimate street racing challenge. Xbox players will race for four intense weeks to earn enough cash to enter the weekly qualifying races, but as time runs out and the pressure from the cops mounts, you’ll have to make tough decisions – there are no rewards without risk.

We saw A$AP ROCKY’s sick Mercedes – did you drive the real version of it before A$AP? (I won’t tell anyone)

Oh I wish it was like that. The car looks absolutely amazing. I would like to drive it at Brands Hatch. Maybe next time he’s in England I can get Rocky to go for a lap around the track with me.

How long does it take to complete the game just following the main story and how long with all the side quests?

HA HA I don’t know because I didn’t. I always end up doing everything and it takes forever. I’d say it’s a long campaign and you definitely get value for your money. The risk and reward systems we put in place add some meaning to every decision you make. You’ll want to take your time and carefully consider your approach to each race session. It’s a new, extremely engaging cycle.

Was it difficult for you to bring the game to Xbox Series X or even Xbox Series S? What gave you the most headaches during development?

Not really. Frostbite allows us to develop for all systems at the same time and I would say that even the Xbox Series S is amazingly capable. I’m not saying that there weren’t a few nasty bugs that we had to squash, but not more than usual and development on the Xbox systems went very smoothly.

What are the technical details of the Xbox Series X? Dynamic resolution, frame rate? performance mode? Is there a 120fps option?

We aim for a consistent gaming experience at a solid 60fps 4K HDR.

And what are the exact details for the Xbox Series S version of the game?

It’s upscaled but still a solid 60fps 4K HDR.

What is the future of your game on Xbox? Have you already created a roadmap? Are there DLC plans for new cars?

The race doesn’t end when the game launches! The world of Lakeshore never stands still as there will be a series of free content updates made available post-launch that will include new features, experiences, content drops and more. More details on post-launch content will be announced soon.

And what does the future hold for your studio? Will we ever see a new Burnout game or Need for Speed Most Wanted 2?

I’d love to try my hand at all of these games, but for now our focus is on making the best Need for Speed games possible.

Is there anything else you would like to say to the XboxDynasty.de readers?

Thanks for reading this article and I hope to see you online in Need for Speed Unbound soon!
