That’s why Dead Space is the perfect horror for me as a horror hater!
When I look at my gaming collection, I mainly see exciting role-playing games, cool story shooters, great battle simulators and thrilling action-adventures. I don’t give a damn about various genres – especially horror. But it’s all the more strange if you take a closer look at my collection: I’ve played every single part of Dead Space. And spend a lot of time again in the remake of the horror hit. How does that fit in with the fact that I’m a scaredy-cat? In the end, isn’t Dead Space a horror? Far from it – I couldn’t recommend it to everyone. But why is Dead Space still worth a possible look for horror haters? The trick is in the mix.
Dead Space isn’t just horror
Above all, I would like to emphasize: Dead Space is and remains scary. The developers took inspiration from all the greatest horror hits – whether it’s the steely space setting of an ALIEN or the sickening body horror of The Thing. I would even go so far as to say that the Necromorphs are among the most disgusting creations in gaming history. And the remake doesn’t make them any more benign, instead the level of detail in their grotesque forms and laser-assisted decomposition has only increased. The poodle’s intrepid, dead-space-loving core is right here, though.

“Ah shit, here we go again.” It’s been years since Ishimura last visited – so the remake comes in very handy.

Creepy monsters? yep Powerful lasers? YEP.
Of course, I realize that Dead Space is a different story on higher difficulties with low ammo and more dangerous and tougher enemies. But my experience relates to the “normal” experience. Because Dead Space doesn’t just let the futuristic engineer Isaac rush from airlock to airlock in panic or hide in a closet. Instead there is a magnificent arsenal of tools such as the plasma cutter, assault rifle, flamethrower, laser cannon and ripper. And these make kindling out of Necromorphs. The monsters can still make you sweat when they ambush you or simply terrorize you en masse. But: Except for a few adversaries, you can laser away the limbs of every creature and turn them off. Since ammunition is not a terribly rare resource, not every single shot has to be perfect.

If you feel very cocky in Dead Space, you can even play with the Necromorphs and take away their mobility options. When the monsters just crawl, they’re still terrible – but definitely mortal.

In this way, Dead Space is more of an atmospheric, brutal shooter than a true horror game. The perfect mix! What’s more, the game’s third-person perspective (including a well-designed interface with an HP gauge on Isaac’s back) doesn’t completely throw you into the fray. You still have enough distance to Isaac and above all your surroundings in view.
Environmental storytelling nailed Dead Space – and the credo in this image remains motto #1 throughout the series.

Dead Space: Great space shooter with a disgusting factor
In this respect I can recommend the game to every shooter fan who loves a detailed sci-fi world, terrible enemies and an exciting atmosphere. On the other hand, if you have problems with “Jump Scares”, you will find many stressors despite Isaac’s powerful arsenal of weapons. But how about you? Is Dead Space a real horror game for you at all? How terrified is Isaac’s exploration of the Ishimura? Are you hoping for a Dead Space 2 remake? Write us in the comments!
