Players say goodbye to popular MMORPG after more than 10 years - that made TERA so special

With The Exiled Realm of Arborea (TERA), an MMORPG from Korea was released in the West in 2012, which is appreciated by many for its action-packed combat system. Tomorrow, June 30th, servers will be shut down worldwide. The players and the publisher officially say goodbye.

When will TERA be discontinued? The TERA servers will be shut down on Thursday, June 30th at 10:00 am German time. This applies to the service in Europe as well as America and Korea. That leaves only a few hours if you want to take a last look at the MMORPG.

Gameforge also announced that all TERA-related pages will also be discontinued shortly after the servers have been shut down.

Why isn’t the MMORPG continuing? TERA didn’t do badly in the West. Most recently, there was a major update in February. It had an active community on Steam with almost 1,000 concurrent players at its peak. At 80%, the reviews were also mostly positive.

But developer Bluehole will no longer produce new content for the game. Gameforge itself probably wanted to operate TERA in the West for a longer period of time, but felt compelled to discontinue the service.

Most recently, the developers released a farewell quest in Korea to complete the story. Unfortunately, the western players could not experience this. We have therefore included a video for you:

TERA – The Final Quest

“TERA helped me through the darkest part of my life”

How are the players reacting to the setting? Under #BestofTERA on Twitter the publisher Gameforge and the players post artwork and screenshots about the MMORPG. There are many stories or tribute videos about the game on reddit and YouTube.

Solid_Angel says about TERA (via reddit):

As much as people have complained that the content is too easy, the developers could of course have made the dungeons and bosses more challenging. But what else could they have done? I can’t remember a game like TERA that offered so much flexibility in gameplay.

It really is wasted potential and has been a great game to this day. I hate tab target, hate static attack moves. TERA gave me so much flexibility, mostly because the majority of players play the classes very differently. I understand that certain classes needed an overhaul because they were broken, but overall it was a great game.

There are also many positive comments under the video for the quest (via YouTube):

  • Demiane is one of many users praising the combat system: “The game still has the best combat system of any MMORPG. It was my favorite game.”
  • iNsan1ty even links important memories to the game: “TERA got me through the darkest part of my life. I will miss this game but I will never forget the gifts and memories it gave me. It was a long war, but we won. Rest in peace dearest friend.”
  • Brandon writes: “It was always my perfect game, every friend I met had to try it. Before high school classes, I used the library computer to browse the forums, although they were never very active. I will always cherish the memories of the original Isle of Dawn and the game’s first discovery.”

A Korean user also created a tribute video on YouTube, in which he recalls special events and boss fights:

What game was TERA? In TERA you created a hero with whom you could explore the game world, complete quests and follow a story. There were 13 different classes to choose from.

Highlights of the game were the varied dungeons and the action combat system. In 2012, when the game was released in the west, the action-packed combats were a special feature. To date, combat has aged well as you must target enemies, keep moving, dodge, and block attacks.

TERA, on the other hand, received criticism for the shop and the non-uniform style in the world. In addition to normal mounts, there are also flying carpets, pigs or police cars as mounts. Everything is possible with the costumes, which completely destroys the immersion for some players.

What do you think of the end of TERA? Will you miss the MMORPG? Did you look back at the end?
