After a long time in the Bermuda Triangle is Ubisoft’s pirate game Skull and Bones recently reappeared and was given a release date right away. From November 8, 2022, you can sail the seven seas as a privateer and write your own legend.

That’s what Ubisoft really seems to want to focus on, according to an interview with True Achievements. In this has Game Director Ryan Barnard talked a bit about how important the team sees the game’s story.

Skull and Bones is not a narrative focused game. There are narrative elements, you will meet important NPCs in the game, which we call Kingpins. They have their own stories, which you will learn as you form a relationship by entering into contracts with them. There is an underlying story that we built all the lore around, but it’s not the focus.

Instead, the team is all about players creating their own story and becoming the kind of pirate they want to be. The progress of the game is determined by collected infamy, which gives you new blueprints for weapons, ships, armor and more. You’ll meet new characters and enemies on your raids, so you’re your very own captain.

The starting position of Skull and Bones is also appropriate: You start as a shipwrecked person and are effectively left with nothing. In the pirate town of Saint-Anne you start with a small nutshell and gradually you have to work your way up, build up your own crew and put together a decent ship. While the focus is supposed to be on the naval battles, there is also quite a bit to do on land. You accept quests, buy new equipment and can even go on a treasure hunt once you find out where the chest is buried.
