MMORPG Guild Wars 2 Changes Ancient PvP Mode, Players Praise: “I’m Coming Back For This”

Guild Wars 2 developers have unveiled their roadmap for the rest of the year. In addition to the usual events, there are also two major changes affecting WvW, a mass PvP mode. This is particularly well received by fans.

What was announced? In a roadmap, ArenaNet, the development team behind the MMORPG Guild Wars 2, shares what’s still to come this year. The game has just started on Steam, which is why the large number of events should be particularly exciting for new players.

Veterans can look forward to major balance changes in PvE and WvW, a new strike mission, and the next beta of the new WvW features. Especially the latter are really well received by the fans. Some would even come back just for that. You can read the complete roadmap and all information directly at Guild Wars 2 (via Guild Wars 2).

What exactly is WvW? Before we go any further into detail, it is important to clarify what the aforementioned WvW actually is. The abbreviation simply stands for World versus World. A mass PvPvE mode that has been around in Guild Wars 2 for a long time and is enjoying great popularity.

Three servers play against each other in 7-day matches on a separate map. Points are gained by holding certain buildings, control points and towers. You have to take them with siege weapons.

Not only the enemy players stand in your way, but also strong NPC opponents who defend the buildings for their team. The highlights come when two or even three groups of players crash into each other. There can be battles with over 200 players, which makes the mode very popular, even beyond the MMORPG’s player base.

Restructuring is finally pending, going into the 6th test phase

What was the problem in WvW? Many players have long been bothered by the fact that servers really compete against each other in WvW. What sounds strange for fans of other MMORPGs has every justification in Guild Wars 2, because outside of WvWs it doesn’t matter which server you play on.

Due to the mega server technology that GW2 uses, players from all servers can always play together. The server selection is simply irrelevant and communities, guilds and friendships are formed across different servers.

But it’s stupid when exactly these people then want to play WvW. That’s where your server suddenly plays a role and you might not be able to gamble with the people you always play with. In the worst case you even have to play against them.

Over the years, this led to a player dwindling in WvW, which is still noticeable today. A restructuring was announced years ago that would allow cross-server alliances to be set up and compete in WvW with them.

What’s happening now? For years there was silence about the planned changes in WvW, but already in 2020 they started to take shape. 5 betas have already been run for the extensive restructuring and the 6th beta is scheduled to start in October.

If this goes well, at least some fans see that, we could expect the big update in 2023. By the way, in line with the beta, Guild Wars 2 will bring major balance changes to the classes before the start on October 14th, which will also affect WvW.

Well-known GW2 YouTuber MightyTeapot analyzed the WvW changes in detail if you want to dig deeper:

Fans looking forward to the update – “If they do this well, I’ll quit BDO immediately”

How are the fans reacting? If you take a look around on reddit, it quickly becomes clear that people are really looking forward to the restructuring. But some are also skeptical about it. The changes themselves are often not questioned.

Much more the release is unclear. Previous betas sometimes went very wrong or even had to be cancelled. Still, everyone agrees that the changes would be great if they finally came.

Some comments in a reddit threadwhich covers the topic, give a deeper insight:

  • Huge_Chocolate says, “If they get the restructure right, they could pull a lot of players from ESO and BDO. The modes in these games have massive player shortages because the developers hardly care. That could be really interesting.”
  • KittenSpronkles writes, “I’d come right back for some WvW action. I’m just not playing Guild Wars 2 right now because my server isn’t very active in WvW.”
  • Vaeiy92 says, “I would quit Black Desert in a heartbeat when ArenaNet finally got the proper WvW update.”

Other changes are also well received: In addition to WvW, other annotations in ArenaNet’s roadmap are also to be commended. An update for Guild Wars 2 should appear about every 3 weeks. Old events are coming back, a whole new 10-player Strike mission is appearing, and some balance changes are pending.

What do you personally think of it? Write it to us in the comments here at MeinMMO.

The balance updates are also urgently needed, because a single class currently dominates the MMORPG – “I would play something else, but it’s pointless”
