What you should consider before buying a treadmill
Treadmills for the home come in different sizes and price ranges and with different ranges of functions. Before you buy, think about how much space you have available, which features are important to you and how intensively you want to train. The following criteria are particularly important:
- Performance: Each treadmill has a fixed maximum speed, which is determined by the power of the motor installed. It dictates what type of training you can do. A speed of around 6 km/h is considered walking training, higher values fall into the running category and allow for conditioning training. The manufacturers specify the maximum speeds so that you can select a treadmill with the top speed that suits you.
- Treadmill dimensions: Not only length and width play a role, but also the height of the tread. For taller people, a low ceiling paired with a high walking surface can make training difficult.
- Running surface and cushioning: The running surface of your future treadmill is determined by the length and width of the surface. The following applies here: the taller you are, the further your steps will be when you run and the area should be correspondingly longer and wider so that you can train comfortably. The cushioning of the treadmill also determines how comfortable your sports unit will be. Here you should ideally test what feels best for you.
- Extra Features: If you just want to run, extras aren’t critical. Many treadmills offer training programs, have hand-held heart rate monitors in the handles, and similar additional features that may be helpful for some users.
